Let me first make the disclaimer that I'm huge fan of Sakura Wars; this anime is a continuation/spinn-off of that series, so this influences my rating. If you have not seen Sakura Wars, don't bother with this; you won't like or understand this anime. For background, Sakura Wars is based in 1920's Japan and is of the "steampunk" genre. The steampunk genre is where everything in a story is ran by steam power; this is a mecha series, but the mecha are steam powered. Comparable with the animated movie Steamboy. This series follows the first as a continuation/extention of the original story line as a natural progression after the Sakura Wars movie. Not as in depth as the first, because it's shorter, but no less entertaining for the Sakura fan. As with the movie, my greatest complaint is the voice over actors. It's not that they're bad (if you watch anime, you'll recognize some of the industry's top notch voice actors from other anime series), but some of the characters loose a little of thier charm/personallity with the new voice actors. It creates an unfamiliarity with some of the characters a viewer has grown to love in the previous series, but I understand that sometimes actors are not available for projects, or other extenuating circumstances. This little gripe however did not deter me from enjoying this series and I feel it is a must have for the Sakura fan. No bad language and no fan service, this anime series works to be very realistic within its hard science fiction mecha style. Animation is a combination of drawn and CGI; it blends well here, but you can tell what is what (no way around this). I probably didn't like this quite as much as the original series, but it's very close.Read full review
I bought this because I saw the first few episodes at an Anime convention. Then after watching it, I realized it was an introduction to a game only available in Japanese and for Japanese consols. It was a bumber there, but that aside, this has some memorable characters and was fairly entertaining. Though, it can be heard to understand if you don't know much about the series. I suggest reading up on Wikipedia before getting this.
