I am a Special Ed. Elementary Life Skills Teacher and this book was recommended to me at a recent Special Ed. workshop. I teach grades 1-6 in a self-contained classroom and I desperately needed "hands-on" tasks that would help my kids understand very basic concepts. The tasks illustrated in this book work equally well with children with autism as with low-functioning children with MR. The areas covered are motor skills, matching, sorting, reading, writing, and math. The book shows pictures of how each task may look, with variations of materials and application for different skill levels. My aides can easily use these tasks with our kids and improvising is simple in adapting to each child's needs. The tasks are made from simple materials we can easily and cheaply collect, such as shoe boxes, pieces of a puzzle, clothespins, blocks, recipe cards and recipe box, etc. I went to Goodwill and picked up a few items at little price, then combined those materials with ones I already had at home. As a Special Ed teacher, I spend a lot of my own money on resources needed in the classroom, and this book provided ideas that were so reasonable to assemble. For a Life Skills or Autism teacher, this is the ONE book I would recommend as invaluable for the means to convey each student's goals and IEP objectives. The tasks would be very effective for students in middle and secondary school also. I would highly recommend this book to any Special Ed Teacher who feels lost and needs to find ways to teach very basic concepts to special students. If I could have been given just one book to help me with my students, "How Do I Teach This Kid" would be that book!!Read full review
Some of the suggestions seem simple, yet aren't something I would have thought of. There are up close photo illustrations to demonstrate each idea, with a material list. Ideas are practical and use everyday items. Not a 'set on the shelf book', but one I can actually try out.

This book is great because it has simple tasks which allow our autistic kids to visualize and develop different skills. The tasks are easy to reproduce at home or school because the materials needed to perform the tasks are things we usually have at our houses.
Great book for teachers.
