This AVR is getting to be somewhat elderly tech, but Dang! it works well. It's really heavy (little over 40 pounds), lots of which is transformer and capacitor, so that it can do its job without audio distortion. It can handle sound systems up to 7.1 at 100 watts/channel (I use only 5.1). It easily integrates with the television set and multiple sound sources and is suitably flexible in its internal routing of them. This is my second one; I broke a terminal on my old one in trying to get to the source of its failure to respond to the remote anymore. But it had worked so well that I was completely sold on getting its identical replacement, and I'll use the old one for parts if/when that becomes necessary.

Has all of the features of the newer Elite receivers, except HDMI(which due to HDCP issues is almost useless!!) and iPod capability (who wants compressed audio through a great home system?) Compare the weight of the 56 txi to the newer Elite receivers. The 56 is MUCH heavier, and as we all know, heavier receivers sound better. The weight is in the power supply transformer and capacitors, where your ears can hear it. The remote is a lot like the 45 tx and older units, not the flimsy one they are shipping with the newer units. Pioneer's MCACC makes setup a breeze. I use the i-link with a DV-47ai for exceptional sound quality for SACD's and DVD-Audio discs. The 56txi can be found occasionally on eBay in the mid-$600 range, and at that price is a real bargain. Google this reciever and see what real users think of it. You'll buy one!!Read full review
The Pioneer VSX56TXI along with the 40 through 50 series of Pioneer Elite receivers are the last of the truly HEAVY built MOSFET units made. These receivers are truly audiophile compliant,by the shear weight of these it it obvious that there is proper shielding of components ie. transformer and power sections, along with BIG 27000uf.capacitors for BIG sound when needed. The warm sound of the MOSFET transistor outputs rival my vacume tube amp.If you want to hear compressed music via.I-Pod get a boom box!,and HDMI switching can be had by a $50.00 remote controlled switchbox.Having owned one of the new breed of Elites I was unimpressed with the overall build and sound quality of these HDMI receivers,no heavier than it's little brother the VSX1017 that can be had for less than $400.00 at Best Buy.All in all if you want a good soundstage you need quality build and components, stick with the heavyweights.Just a note from one who has walked both paths. I love this particular receiver because I have a turntable a tape player and VCR and other older legacy equipment that I was not able to use with any of the new pioneer stereo receivers that uses HDMI and is only interested in digital output or inputs so I love this receiver because it has lots of great features great sound and I can use all my old legacy equipment, I guess I'm not ready to be able to forget all my great records tapes and all my past.
