I was glad that someone finally wrote this book, the fascinating story of a man who truly was "Depraved". A rather obscure story, not known by many of the general public, that makes such modern day fictionalizations as "Hannibal Lecter" pale in comparison. This man, in the 1880's embarked upon building a rental/boarding house that seems to have been designed from it's inception for murder. In addition he operated many scams and seemed to be motivated by greed and sadism. This book is the most comprehensive modern coverage of these crimes to date. As a reader, I thought that the writer, Harold Schechter, could have done a better job at fleshing out his portrait of Holmes himself, if for nothing else but to satisfy this reader's prurient interest. Some "poetic license" would have assisted the reader in slogging through the first half of the book, which ran rather slow. The second half of the book makes for better reading, and moves along at a quick pace, filled with more insight into Holmes the man and a glimpse into his self-serving, self pitying mind. All in all this book is worthwhile reading by anyone interested in criminal history, or crime readers in general. This reader hopes that it will spark the interest of a more able writer, or perhaps a skilled director, because this is a riveting story that deserves to be told well.Read full review
This book is based extensively on court transcripts as well as first-person interviews of a criminal so dastardly that most people know nothing of the crimes he committed at the turn of the 19th century. In a time when these cases seem to pop up almost daily, this is a view of America in it's early pre-WW1 era. It contains graphic accounts of the circuitous route that H H Holmes led investigators on. Most of the events occurred in the tri-state area of Illinois, Indiana and Ohio and as far reaching as Toronto Canada. From the beginning to the hellish end of his career, Holmes was the first of his kind to commit murder on such a scale. But more than that, it reveals just how devious human nature can be, even in today's connected world.
