This is an incredibly detailed book about Aladdin oil lamps. The book is lavishly illustrated throughout with mostly black and white photos, illustrations, reprinted ads, and catalog pages. The text and appendices are very detailed. It covers not only the oil lamps, but also shows the shades, mantles, galleries, generators, chimneys, brackets, wicks, and more. There are chapters on Aladdin in Canada, England, and Australia. Appendices cover: Principal Offices and U.S. Subsidiaries; How to Date Printed Literature; U.S. Patents; Specifications for Kerosene Oil; Important Facts (1912); Supplies for Other Kerosene Lamps; U.S. Catalogues (1908-1930); British Catalogue (1935); Sales Brochures (1929-1949); Aladdinite shades (1931-1932); Whip-o-lite shades (1933-1949); and Supplies and Extra Parts (1915-1974). It also has: Reference Notes; Glossary; Bibliography; and an Index. This is NOT a value guide although at this time a separate value guide for this book is avaiable.Read full review
Bit of a cheesy title, but as far as Aladdin Lamps go, this is the bible - a must-have if you're a collector or dealer in Aladdin Lamps. As you'd expect, the book gives much more coverage to US Aladdins, since they were far more prolific in model and style, but the coverage of British, Australian, South American and Hong Kong lamps is worthwhile. Heavily illustrated and very comprehensive - as well as giving the historical background and styles of Aladdins over 100-some years, it goes into the technical and practical aspects, including bringing old lamps back into operation. The numerous Appendices are useful for helping collectors etc to date a lamp. It doesn't go into valuations, since these are constantly changing, but there are other, cheaper publications which cover this aspect, such as the excellent "Aladdin - Collector Manual and Price Guide", by the same author.Read full review
For anyone that is interested in Aladdin kerosene lamps, this book is THE bible. This book is loaded with a tremendous amount of history and valuable information. More of the photos could be in color rather than B & W. Worth having nonetheless. Great reference material not only for the seasoned collector / restorer, but the novice as well. A must have.
