The first thing I noticed about the textbook was that it seemed to be written for young readers. The illustrations are mainly what seem rudimentary about it (learning another language, especially Chinese, is not the simple part!). Though that was my first impression of the book, my latest impressions are that it is a great tool for learning Simplified Chinese. The lessons begin with vocabulary, both in pinyin and characters. It is followed by a dialogue, notes and grammar. Although all elementary Chinese textbooks will include these three functions, this textbook in particular provides notes and grammar lessons in a very understandable way. The introduction to the book includes invaluable lessons on initials and finals (which make up Chinese words), and the appendix offers helpful notes about China's provinces and cities and a Chinese (pinyin) to English index. Overall, as this does a great job of introducing Chinese word structure, sentence structure, vocabulary, dialogue and characters, I would recommend this as your guide to elementary Simplified Chinese.Read full review
