Time for this HST fanatic to wind it up and throw it out of the park from the pitcher's mound one more time for Dr. Gonzo, himself. Gonzo journalism or "the new journalism" was not about the excesses which were indulged by the new journalists nor was it about celebrating vices as virtues what it was about was how much a gonzo writer could read his personal life, politics, perspective, attitudes and opinions into the story at hand. Here are the last dispatches of HST from the ESPN desk, if you ever yelled at the TV while watching your favorite televised sporting event or if you ever have carried on a discussion about current events while watching your favorite televised sporting event this is the book for you. The analogy of professional football players as modern day pirates is revisited again like it was originally in "The Great Shark Hunt" also by HST. The grueling epic runner's marathon is also revisited as it was originally in the very under rated and sadly now out of print misunderstood darkly satirical "The Curse of Lono." In "Hell's Angels" also by Hunter S. Thompson, HST recounts the story of an anonymous poet, you would swear it was Charles Bukowski, who threw a metal trash can under a passing city bus just to hear the sound it would make, this is why you read the man, this is why you want to read the man! You hear the guns, you see the surrealistic landscape, you get queasy from the recounting of the drugs and alcohol but you get what Hunter S. Thompson is driving at, you realize it is not about going quietly, it is about raging against the injustices of not just this world but your world as well. HST is about cutting loose, digging it, loving it and as for conformity just plain leaving it. If you have not read the man's books you should because so much of what he has written has come to pass or is on it's way to passing by again, there is no movie, spoken word piece or actor that can bring the words of the big bad HST to life the way they will come to life in your head while you're reading his works. "Hey Rube" is a great introduction for new fans or an even greater long goodbye for longtime fans. I can only close by quoting "Steppenwolf's" "Born to Be Wild" when it comes to the writings of Hunter S. Thompson. "Get your motor running head out on the highway, Looking for adventure and whatever comes our way, Yeah darling gonna make it happen, take the world in a loving embrace, Fire all of your guns at once and explode into Space!"Read full review
