Vincent Price plays a wealthy man who invites several people to a rented haunted house for a ghost party. If they come and stay the whole night, he will pay them, or their beneficiaries $10,000.00 each. Most chose to attend because they need the money. But the doors lock at midnight and can't be reopened until 8 o'clock in the morning. There is no way out and there is no phone to call for help if needed. There are 7 ghosts in the house because 7 people were previously murdered there. Filmed in black and white in 1958, the picture quality is very clean and crisp. The interplay between the different characters and the way Price plays on the flaws in their personalities is the core of this mystery. There are twists and turns in the plot, and you don't know who or what is causing all the mishaps. As things start to happen, they start to suspect each other, and that adds to the mix. The ending is a surprise, and this being a murder mystery, is as it should be. This is a well produced mystery with good acting, a decent plot and no gore. Price was in dozens of movies over his long career and it is doubtful that many of them were much better that this production. Not rated, it probably would be a PG today, based primarily on the suspense.Read full review
Love the movie. I saw long, long ago as a child and back then it scared the heck out of me. My mom and I watched it again the other night, since those many years ago, and it was a hoot. By todays standards, this now doesn't come close to scary but we were very entertained and some really great laughs! For those who have not ever seen it, it may be scary. There are some startling parts ... we liked it! oklucycat
while not oscar material, it is quite an entertaining and engaging movie held together by a cast of characters that just blend perfectly.....proving high dollar special effects are not always needed to hold your attention. price , as always , is the master of disaster..... show this one to your kids
The great film stars the wonderful Vincent Price. One of the greatest actors of all time. Definitely a must have for any Vincent collector. Do not watch the remake, watch this original!
IMO it is how b&w horror should be seen. The whole feel of this movie will leave you shaking Vincent Price has the creepiest voice (Narrator for the intro and outro to the Michael Jackson's Thriller song) .
