Pros: I first saw this book in my local public library and I really like it because the author elaborates on topics he presents and explains details. I have read another C++ textbook that did not have as much information as this one. I can I even continue reading this book after I'm done with the course because it has lots of information. Con: The only little thing I don't like about the book, and didn't mind much, is that similar case studies or examples are given in each chapter like an automated teller machine program. This is somewhat boring and uninteresting.
This is a very informative book. A lot of concepts are thoroughly discussed. It's too informative for a beginner, but full dedication to it will probably give satisfying results. However, there's something wrong in the format of the book that makes it a little bit hard to read and follow. Huge number of boxed tips/common errors etc and not so attractive paragraphs are quite annoying. IMHO, this is a book to read at intermediate level. Better start off with some other (shorter) book and then move to this one.
I have only read the first three chapters of the text. The detail of the language is explained well. My teacher who gave us propagation of what the book can do for us as students was explained as working knowledge. Meaning if followed through and practicing the examples one can be able to recieve a job from using the book. Having Working knowledge.
Be very cautious about the International version. It's printed on thin paper so the print bleeds through. Also, the one I got came with a CD but it doesn't come with the code number to access Dietel's cyberclassroom which is a must have resource. Pay the extra money for the U.S. version, it's much easier to read.
Execellent programming book. Using it for review. However, introducing class in chapter three might be a bit tough for intro students. All programs are well written and all compile. Like the formate so much also bought other books by Deitel.
