I highly recommend that new players read this book, and the other two volumes after at least learning the basics of hold 'em. I felt this book really helped improve my game, and think about certain situations in a much better way. The style it is written in is very easy to read, and isn't too advanced so that most people will get a lot out of the book. Poker has changed a lot since this book was published, but most of the strategies and advice still hold up today. No doubt reading and applying what you learn in this book will improve your game if you are an average, fairly new player or someone who has been playing casually and is looking to take their game to the next level. I've read volume 1 and 2 and now onto the 3rd. I also have the two cash game books on the way. I used to play a lot of poker several years ago, and then took a break from the game and just recently over the past few months have been playing a lot more often. After completing this book, I cashed in 2nd place in a fairly large MTT for $700. I am still playing at micro/low stakes mostly, but I feel this advice provides a good foundation to build on. I have a list of other poker books I want to read as well, such as "The Theory of Poker" and Mike Caro's Book of Tells. Anyways, this is a great poker book in my opinion, and any player should take the time to give it a read. It can be picked up used for just a few bucks, and is well worth the price. I would probably not even mind paying full price for a new copy, but I typically buy used books if not purchasing Kindle e-books.Read full review

this book is ideal for beginners, and intermediate... i think it will definitely improve your game if your expert. It covers some of the more complex NL holdem concepts snd explains them more simple. some of the content can be also applied to cash/ring games. definetly looking forward to read the next volume. Also provides and explains problems at the end of the chapter that definetly help you a lot
I have previewed a few of the books on Hold Em and found this one to appear the best. I have read about 1/3 of the book and find it is an excellent one for me. It not only gives you the problems, but goes over the various solutions and explains what can happen. It gives you an overall philosophy on the game and various scenarios and also a more indepth detail. I am finding my game is improving in knowledge and success already. I intend to follow up with the other books in his series. An excellent book. Highly recommended. Not boringly dry.
Let's face it. How to books are by nature-boring. I bought three copies of this book so that I can stash them is separate locations and continue reading. If you're gonna play hold-em, you might as well play smart-right?
