Searching for the bumper sticker "God is not a Republican or a Democrat" led me to Sojourners, Jim Wallis' organization that challenges and empowers people of faith to push moral issues such as social justice, peace, and ending poverty onto the US political agenda. When I discovered Sojourners, I was thrilled to learn that so many Christians hold the same convictions that I do that Christians should not be just one- or two-issue voters (abortion and gay marriage) in the pocket of the Republican party. We as Christians have a responsibility to challenge our politicians to address the moral arguments of Jesus, the apostles, and the prophets in support of the poor and oppressed. God's Politics lays the Biblical foundation for Christian participation in politics and provides examples and tools to empower it.Read full review
This is a beautiful book that gives great perspective on politics. The subtitle is a subtle thought with profound implications, "Why the right gets it wrong and the left doesn't get it." It proves throughout that there must be some other way to deal with these issues there must be another way to deal with poverty and AIDS, and then, puts feet to it. He shares practical application from his own life and inspires others to leave there mark as well. However, if you aren't up for having your world view challenged with that of Christ's, you probably should look somewhere else.
I have really enjoyed reading Jim Wallis' overview from a Christian perspective about what led up to the war in Iraq. His attempt along with other religious leaders from around the war to really exaim what it is we are suppose to be doing about war is not only enlightening but challenges us as Christians to ask what is it that has happened in the US today and why are we doing these things to others when there are so many more important issues we should be focusing on instead (ie. poverty, etc,)
A surprising book, one that if possible should be required reading for so many of us. Today, we tend to be convinced that God is on our side. But, are we on God's side. This book deals plainly with this question. Am the better for having read this straight forward reminder of WHO, WHAT & WHY God really is. Give yourself a break, read this book. Whether your a right or left winger, read it.
Everyone has read a book that they 'couldn't put down' untill they were done. This is the first book that even after I completed I still couldn't put it down. The book is magic and Jim Wallis is a long overdue voice.
