Undoubtedly, this 4-hour version of 1990's "Dances With Wolves" is ten-and-a-half times better than the 3-hour version. There are several more characters, plus a few extra scenes that actually enhance and improve the remainder of the movie. Kevin Costner stars Lt. John J. Dunbar, a recently decorated hero from the Civil War. His one wish is to see the frontier before it vanishes. So, he is assigned to a post several miles away, where he meets a tribe of Sioux indians. While he does not seem to take very kindly to them at first, he eventually becomes friends with the group. He also falls in love with the white woman who was raised by the Sioux, 'Stands-With-A-Fist', played by Mary McDonnell. Along the way, Lt. Dunbar makes a very fateful decision, in which he completely abandons his military service for a life with the Sioux tribe. The visual panorama of this sweeping epic masterpiece is breathtaking in every sequence of this film. The buffalo hunt scene is one of the best-filmed moments of recent cinema. Originally released at a 3-hour running time, this reissue adds nearly an additional hour of footage to this contemporary classic movie event. Altogether, this becomes an essential viewing experience that no fan of this movie should ever miss or be without. Winner of 7 Academy Awards, including Best Director (Costner) and Best Picture, "Dances With Wolves" remains a magnificent film achievement that still seems fresh and exciting, every time.Read full review
