The author writes in a friendly and humorous manner, which helps to take the stress out of a subject that can indeed be intimidating. The subject is introduced in gradual doses, each chapter building upon the previous one. It should be noted the this is definitely college-level chemistry, not intro to chemistry and as such is not for the student with limited background in the subject. There are numerous helpful diagrams and cartoons on the subject pop up to de-stress. Overall, an excellent adjunct to the chemistry curriculum.

I purchased this book because I was apprehensive about organic chemistry, and I wanted to help my grade as much as possible. I've always had good luck with other "Dummies" books, so I figured this one could only help me. This book is great to read before you begin your course. It will give you some basic review of some of those chemistry principles that you may be weak on, never fully grasped, or are just completely clueless about. It will provide you with a good outline of what to expect in the course that everyone tells you is absolutely horrible. It is also extremely useful to keep it handy to help clarify some of some concepts that your textbook may present in a language that you think is English because you recognize the words, but you just plain don't understand. I recommended making time to read pertinent chapters along with your regular hernia-inducing textbook, because it will really help you throughout the course. There are some wonderful helpful hints to facilitate better understanding of difficult concepts. Organic chemistry is not really as bad as everyone has led you to belive; rather, there is a tremendous amount of memorization, tons of nomenclature, conceptualization of lots of various reactions and, of course, lots of those concepts that were touched on in your general chemistry courses that are covered in more detail here. If you did okay in regular chemistry, you should do fine in organic chemistry; and if you didn't, this book will help bridge the gap and will make you less fearful. I highly recommend this book! It will be a valuable asset and when the class is over, if you simply cannot stand to keep anything resembling chemistry, you can also resell it to another fearful organic chemistry student.Read full review
I bought this book to read and study so I can get a head start on learning Organic Chemistry. I am scheduled to take Organic Chemistry in the Fall 2008 at the college that I am attending and I hear it is hard. So I thought that it would be in my best interest to start early. Basically, I purchased this book so I could self teach myself. In addition, I will also use this if I need assistance when I am in Organic Chemistry because the For Dummies series of books are so much easier to understand than most textbooks (though I wouldn't use it as a substitute for my actual textbook, I would use it in addition to my textbook.) This book is very knowledgable and helped me a great deal. The For Dummies series of books have yet to let me down for I have owned and used quite a few of them.
The book is relatively entertaining, breaks down O-Chem barney style. I have only made it thru the first 100 pages, but as of right now I would recomend it to other people. I think it would be a good companion to a O-chem class, kind of like a second round of lecture explaining things.
This a a great tool for learning organic chemistry and is very easy to understand. Also a refresher is included for chemistry and the author tells you what you need to know to learn organic chemistry.

I BOUGHT THIS BOOK TO LEARN IN AN EASY TO UNDERSTAND WAY ABOUT, ORGANIC CHEMISTRY. THIS BOOK COVERS ALL THE TUFF SUBJECTS IN PLAIN EASY TO UNDERSTAND TERMS. THIS IS A GREAT STARTING POINT FOR THE BEGINNER TO LEARN THE BASICS OF A TUFF SUBJECT. IT WILL ALSO SERVE AS A REFERANSE TO BRUSH UP ON THINGS THAT MAY BE FORGOTON. THIS BOOK IS MUCH EASIER TO UNDERSTAND THAN THE OTHER BOOKS FOR BEGGINERS I HAVE TRIED. MY ONLY DISLIKE IS ITS NOT LONGER, LEANING TOWARDS A SECOND SIMESTER.
This book really helps someone who's an aspiring pre-health major and for someone who absolutely does not get organic chemistry lingo. Definitely helpful with lots of illustrations and step by step explanations to approaching problems. I found this book very useful and helpful that it actually matches the chapters in my college textbook. A must buY!
