I am a music fan, and enjoy listening to sounds of the season at Christmas, though sometimes we get a little fed up of the more traditional and dare I say it, overplayed tracks that pay homage to all things Christmas! This CD is something a little out of the box, with reference to Chrismukkah, the Christian / jewish hybrid holiday celebrated on the Fox series - The O.C. Of course, like all the music showcased on this series, the tracks are new, a little different and have an edgy, alternative theme running through them! A range of artists cover some well known Christmas tunes, with their own unique twist; for example Jimmy eats World take the sugar coated Wham song "last Christmas" and jazz it up a bit, from the pitiful mourning of George Michael to a more upbeat song we can get our teeth into a little more! Rooney take a big favorite of mine..."Merry Christmas" from Brit Glamrock band - Slade, and in contrast to the aforementioned track - tone it down somewhat! For me, this track loses the original appeal and feels like a watered down version of the original - it may work for someone with no knowledge of the Slade version, but for me this falls flat! The Eels however deliver a stellar sound with 'Christmas is going to the Dogs 'and Low with 'just Like Christmas' is a festive track with great appeal!! "Maybe this Christmas" delivered of Ron Sexsmith, is a serene dreamy Christmas Eve song , perfect to curl up to in front of the fire! But for me, the O.C. with its record of bringing us some killer sounds and introducing new artists and / or tracks, loses points on this CD. There could have been some more edgy sounds on traditional tracks which might work better for the festive season than this collection of songs, many of which rework an original to poorer effect! It just needs something more daring and loud, but instead feels very watered down...okay, but not one I will reach for much out of the Christmas CD pile!!Read full review
I bought the OC Christmukkah cd to hear Rooney and Eels since I really like both bands' music, but I ended up preferring other artists' songs on the cd, so that was a nice surprise. I think this is a good cd if you're looking for something non-traditional. The Raveonettes "Christmas Song" and Low's "Just Like Christmas" are, in my opinion, soothing and stylish- they gave me the fuzzy Christmas feeling while listening to this cd. I played this cd in my car for most of December and didn't get the least bit tired of the more upbeat songs like The Long Winters "Christmas with you is the Best" or Jimmy Eat World's "Last Christmas" either. Rooney's "Merry Christmas Everybody" wasn't a let-down at all. It's just a nice blend of music. Overall, I like the whole cd and would recommend buying it. It's a good depart from various artists' renditions of the more traditional Christmas songs.Read full review
