The writing style in this book is crystal clear, down to earth and always seems to come directly to the point; so you won't find any "filler fluff" whatsoever in this well-written volume. The author starts off by showing the basic tools of the trade telling you how to use them properly. With this foundation in place, he launches directly into how to prepare your food properly; and gives you the confidence you need to tackle butchering any animals you might want, from the largest moose, buffalo or steer, down to the smallest bird you have to do. My idea of what a "How To Book" teach encompasses more than simply showing the reader this technique or that. It also needs to supply the background material in a way that leads you comfortably from your original point of interest, all the way through to the end of your endeavor. Dr. Mettler does a superior job doing this, and then he gives you even more of why you bought his book. The aspect that makes this book really shine is that you also learn how to make sausage and jerky, construction plans a few kinds of smoke houses and how to properly smoke the meat you just prepared. Next, you get several suggested menu items and the recipes for using it. I went from someone who had never even considered trying something like this into someone who successfully butchered a full-grown steer my first time out of the shoot. I cannot think of a better recommendation than that. The bottom line here is that if you buy a copy of Basic Butchering of Livestock & Game, you won't want to put it down until you get to the last page. I bought this book for my hubby and he loved the information in it! I loved the detailed pictures but as many know when it comes to butchering a book is great BUT a hands on lessons sure is the best. Either way, the book is great to use to help you. I have purchased a few other books like this and this one is by far the best=)
I bought a book called Basic Butchering of livestock & Game by John J.Mettler Jr. This book has good pictures and easy to read instructions. Has good details how to butcher. Has a lot good recipes.
Great book for my husband. Perfect to keep his attention and get him thinking about doing some butchering by ourselves. He already knew how to butcher beef, the reading about how to do other animals was fun and we can't wait to try some! The pictures are great in it and I think it will be easy to follow the instructions.
