SynopsisAn intimate journey across America, as told by one of its most beloved writers To hear the speech of the real America, to smell the grass and the trees, to see the colors and the light--these were John Steinbeck's goals as he set out, at the age of fifty-eight, to rediscover the country he had been writing about for so many years. With Charley, his French poodle, Steinbeck drives the interstates and the country roads, dines with truckers, encounters bears at Yellowstone and old friends in San Francisco. Along the way he reflects on the American character, racial hostility, the particular form of American loneliness he finds almost everywhere, and the unexpected kindness of strangers.

  • A history book in a travelogue

John Steinbeck is an excellent writer, as we all know, but this particular book is also a history of the time in which it was written as well as providing insight into the mind of a restless wanderer. I plan to retire in a couple of years and live in an RV traveling around the country, so I was eager to read about his trip. I got what I wanted and so much more out of this book. Highly recommend it to anyone, wandering soul or not.

  • Travels With Charley Ages Well--Like Fine Wine

I loved this book when I first read it--more than 50 years ago and so I decided to revisit it. Steinbeck wrote this unique travel account in which he and his dog Charlie took a 10,000 mile journey across America. Along the way, he reawakened his love for San Francisco and he writes vividly about the natural beauty of Montana and the golden autumn of New England. In a totally different tone, he communicates his revulsion toward the racial hated he witnessed in New Orleans.

  • A wonderful journey thru Americana which no longer exists but is compelling and nostalgic

Few books are written this well. You get such a strong feeling for what Steinbeck is describing along with his clever wit. He shares experiences of true Americana. It will be especially appreciated by anyone who is now old enough to have lived during the early 1960s in America. Just a beautiful journey. I read this book several years ago and never forgot it and I am glad I recently bought another copy and to reread.

  • Most entertaining cross-country travel without even having to leave your own state!

Saw this title referenced in an article on dogs, and knew it would be a fun read with this iconic writer behind the wheel with his trusty canine BFF by his side to keep him company. Had to have a copy, and was delighted to have found an inexpensive copy on eBay! If you wanna enjoy some humorous, and sage Steinbeck anecdotes about some of our states, I highly recommend traveling along with John, and Charley in their customized home on wheels.....it’s a trip you won’t ever forget!

  • Couldn't be a better title a Man and his Dog learning what he wrote about at the end of his career and life

I'm a huge fan of Steinbeck and Travels with Charlie was his last book. He wrote about America the depression and the downtrod. What inspired him to write Travels with Charlie was he made a lot of money about America and the people in hard times and he wanted to travel America and pay tribute to all he wrote.

  • I would love to be traveling with Charlie and John

The writer is timeless. I am transformed whenI read John Steinbeck’s books. This book especially appeals to me, because he travels America, describing what it’s like and remarkably, things haven’t changed all that much.

  • good read

Great story. He gets very passionate about racism in the South in the 60s and then it falls apart at the end.
