The movie is a more cerebral 'zombie movie'. With a lower budget and scripted with more subtlety. The story draws you in with more realistic events that you can see happening to yourself - instead of the characters powering through impossible situations like a closet superhero (like most zombie movies geared for the 13 - 21 y/o set). "The Dead" makes you care about the characters portrayed, as one absolutely understands their very real vulnerability. These are people in shockingly real, relentless danger and there is no assumption of a miraculous last minute rescue. The movie is grim, grabbing your sympathy and attention and keeping it. An online acquaintance of mine said this about "The Dead" : "It relies on slow build up instead of cheap-a** thrills and jump scares. It's a dark story, and I actually gave a sh** about it." I give it 4 stars as a movie rating (comparing with movies of all types). I give it 5 stars as a zombie movie. For reference; I am a 49 y/o woman who loves Downton Abbey and The Walking Dead.
