Pirates Pirates and the even more evil government officials.
In this series you get to examine brutality, murder, theft, torture, and then you also get to meet the pirates. Who also steal and kill, but who are not nearly as brutal and ruthless and amoral as the government officials who seek to prevent the pirates from stealing the goods the crown has stolen. The show is entertaining, with well written and developed characters, and an engaging story arc. A bit short on elegance and period feel
Didn't like it. There is something about the modern hand-held drifty-camera and "on the nose" sort of formula British (well Australian) sort of acting/shooting that lacks the right atmosphere and "class" that I need to be convinced by something like this. The "F" word all over the place doesn't fit for me either, it plasters "modern" all over what is supposed to pass for a period piece. The costumes (of course) and settings are right, and the pirates are duly evil and filthy looking, but it doesn't fly for me. They should keep the cameras on the tripods, watch "Mutiny on the Bounty" with Hopkins/Gibson as a model, and do it again. Black sails is the best period series based off pirates ever made.
This series is for real and shows how it really was back then in the day. I have read many books written by historians of that period.
