I was around 9 years old when the show first aired here, and I immediately felt immersed in the colorful palette and the depth of the characters, as I haven't before. Sure I had some shows that were my favorite at the time, but Gargoyles gave that that I looked for in one and a bit more. You could tell the creative team really put story telling in first place instead of just making a show to sell toys, and I am really thankful they didn't look us kids(back then) down , as the stories are engaging and thought provoking. The characters are individuals developed differently and you can see even their quirks and antics; good guys are not always right, nor bad guys are just evil (save very few exceptions but they're minor plot drivers). Now that I've rewatched this series as an adult, I even find more things hidden between the lines, and of course, the wonderful acting just makes it even more fleshed and real. In the first 5 episodes of this dvd you can hear the audio commentaries of the creative staff and a special guest: Keith David (Goliath) that really brings up a new light to how the show was conceived. Plus is just a very lighthearted talk with a humorous touch that feels really refreshing. In short, a really wonderful 90's animation jewel, packaged with action, interesting plot twists, endearing characters, and a familiar feeling that not many shows have achieved as far as I'm concerned. I assure you I'll better have my little sister watching this show with me than anything they have for kids right now!Read full review
I love everything, could talk about the show and its content for hours, everything from the dark tone to complex, provocative plots, stirring action, and superb voice actors just kills. But the DVD was affordable, and came in good condition. Perfect experience.

This is an entertaining series about a group of mythical gargoyles that awaken in modern day New York. The the twist is that while gargoyles in legend are usually viewed as evil, these so called "monsters" are actually more noble and honorable than most humans. It is really an allegorical message similar to the old beauty and the beast tale ; to paraphrase J.R.R. Tolkien, foul looks do not mean a foul character. There is even a character in the beauty role, as a woman police detective who befriends the gargoyles and helps them to understand their new world. There are also some great storylines involving historical characters from medieval history.
I bought this as a present for my wife, who had loved the cartoon when it was on the air back before we met. She watched it with our younger son, who loved the show. Well written, well animated, well acted by the voice cast... just an all-around superior production, especially compared to some of the cheap stuff that passes for 'animation' nowadays. I intentionally bought one with a beater case for a very low price, but as long as the discs are playable, which these were, the packages aren't as important to me.
The same first season of gargoyles my husband and I knew and loved as kids! It's so nice to see the story and how it unfolds again. Now engaging a new generation with my children. ( And my adopted Grandpa can't get enough either!)
