Jethro Tull may not be to everybodies taste but to me they are probably one of the finest of the UK prog rock bands of the seventies. Even here it is debatable if it is right to categorise them as just prog rock. With the hugely talented Ian Anderson at the helm they venture very competently into folk and jazz spheres. Anderson's writing is clever, witty and musically unique. You may however need to listen many times to really appreciate a piece but when you get it it is a joy. A Passion Play fits into this position more than most. It has very heavy classical overtones (especially as the whole album is one track). When I first heard it as a Tull fan I didn't like it at all but now enjoy it enormously. It has such musical depth in all its parts and is so rewarding. This isn't for the lightweight. It is a challenge, but it is also such a delight as I discovered when I returned to it after not hearing it for a couple of decades. Enjoy if you dare! Like your favorite tartan slippers it will never be fashionable but you will love it.Read full review
