And they said good 3D couldn't be done on the Saturn! Well take a look at this version. Very well executed version of the game. It's not a direct port of ID softwares engine but a recreated version using the excellent Powerslave engine. It's near identical. The only real downside to this game is of course the controller. It uses the standard 6 button / 8 direction controller pad. Now if you can get a net link/keyboard you would have a perfect setup. Otherwise there is a bit of a learning curve.

Although this is probably a 4.5 star port, I am giving it the nod to 5 stars because this is the best home console port of Quake available. Don't let anyone try to tell you the blurry, NIN soundtrack lacking N64 version is better, because true Quake fans will know otherwise. Firstly, this was the Saturn game that wasn't supposed to happen. No one thought the Saturn hardware was capable of handling this game, and developers (including Id Software) were not interested in trying to port it. Enter Lobotomy Software Inc. This was the developer known for making a great 3D game on the Saturn entitled PowerSlave. They were offered the job, and happily accepted the great challenge of porting what was the most advanced fully 3D game ever developed at the time to the Sega Saturn. Lobotomy Software used their own "Slave Driver" engine that was a better match for the Saturn's hardware, and redrew ALL of the games maps from scratch. The end result is a very fun and playable port that features some nice little extras like four exclusive stages and unique lighting effects not found in the original. The maps are very true to the original, save a few minor changes, and the graphics, while expectedly dialed down a bit are very true to form. This port features better textures and detail than the N64 port! Not to mention, the original NIN soundtrack from the PC version is here in all of its glory, unlike the N64's knock-off soundtrack. The frame rate does suffer during intense action on screen, but it remains a smooth running and enjoyable version that any Quake fan is sure to enjoy. Also, I highly recommend the Saturn's 3D analog (Nights into Dreams) controller with this game. It was developed to play better on this stick, and it truly does. I feel this port offers enough uniqueness to enjoy it on a separate level from the PC version. While the PC version is clearly superior, this version and its four exclusive stages, different lighting effects and slightly unique feel due to the Slave Driver engine, offer a fresh replay of a very classic game. I can highly recommend this port to those who will judge it on its own merit and not compare it to a modded PC version on a modern machine. Lobotomy Software deserves great credit for making this one happen. PROS - Original NIN soundtrack - All levels and difficulty settings intact - easy, normal, nightmare - Unique and cool lighting effects that add to the feel - Four exclusive stages - Better textures and detail than the blurred out N64 port CONS - Frame rate suffers in some areas - Controls can be difficult to adapt to (trust me, use the 3D controller) - Can be a bit too dark at timesRead full review

As with most FPS on Saturn it runs on the goofy exhumed engine which did not age well at all. Considering quake had its own engine this is a fairly unforgivable departure but still ok. More like Doom64 which was neither Doom nor truly 64 bit lol. Ultimately this runs decent has over whelming lighting effects the rest of graphics are well below DOS version. If you have the 3d controller try that it does not control well on standard controller.

quake is the 1st 1st person shooter I ever got into.. The Good IT long, challenging, good graphics, has great weapons, affordable, one of the better games for the Saturn, and great music!! BAD Funky control. takes a bit to get use to. A bit hard latter on. maybe too hard!!! 1 Player only!! What no split screen or even better Sega Netlink?! If only this was on the netlink!! All In All I love this game it has given me a lot of fun. Great to add to your collection
I enjoyed the PC version of Quake and this is almost as good. Since Quake only was made for DOS not current versions of Windows, this is a nice compromise. Pros: Some of the Best graphics ever on Saturn. The lighting effects are very good and the sound is dead on! Cons: Jerky control with standard Saturn controller and no on-the-fly game saves. Control issues are disappear if you have or upgrade to a Saturn 3D controller as shipped with Nights Into Dreams game. Other minor gripe is single player only mode. Limitations aside, it is still a good if not great port. This is a very rare find be prepared to pay a premiun especially if game is complete.
Lobotomy Software was one of the companies responsible for proving that 3D FPS games could be handled on the Saturn which was already starting to look like a diamond in the rough against its competition at the time, the N64 and PS1. Quake is a legendary PC FPS game from ID Software who created Wolfenstein 3D and Doom, and while Lobotomy couldn't port the game hair for hair, they did make a fantastic conversion that is very enjoyable on the Saturn and worthy of a hardcore Saturn fan's attention. Quake is fast, brutal, and simple for its time playing like a fully realized 3D Doom, which is a good thing if you're an ID/Doom/Duke 3D (aka classic era FPS) fan. It has over 30 levels divided up into 4 episodes similar to Doom's setup and a playstyle similar to Doom in that you can pick up an assortment of guns and keep them all on you (unlike modern FPS which often limit you to 2 or 3 on hand.) The settings of Quake are often dark, gothic, and creepy, having you on the look out for oncoming ambushes. What hinders Quake most on the Saturn is the learning durve for controls (which you can adjust, and a 3D Saturn pad helps), followed by the lack of multiplayer which has come to be a standard that Quake almost always delivered. Also, the diffiulty is fairly high, expect to restart a level a few times as you adjsut to the controls and setting. Lastly, the game does have a fitting atmosphere but it's too dark and there's no brightness options to help seeing a little better. Overall Quake is a great and difficult Saturn FPS experience that if Lobotomy was still active today, should still earn them praise. They proved that the Saturn, while difficult to program efficiently for, could handle some great 3D conversions if you took the time to produce for the "little Sega underdog".Read full review

Quake for the Saturn is worth buying. Well, only if you're really good with the Saturn controller, and if you can handle some difficult levels and enemies, and if you never played the PC version. Pros: -Fun gameplay -Great graphics for a Saturn game. -Decent atmospheric music Cons: -At times, the game is challenging -No multiplayer support in this port of Quake, unlike the PC and N64 ports. -Very little storyline -Awkward control layout at first.
I bought this product because it has a high fun factor and great graphics for the 32 bit era and good sound & good control.
