I am strongly touting this as an ideal astrology book for a beginner. I have seen many astrology books over the years and I always seem to come back to Ms Woolfolk's book as a strong recommendation for beginners. This book is easy to read and comprehend. This is very important, because those first delving into astrology are apt to find themselves somewhat overwhelmed in digesting so much *unusual* knowledge at first. Woolfolk breaks things down simply, so that the student astrologer can get an easy grasp of each astrological sign , the 12 houses of the zodiac and what they represent in the chart, as well as the significance of each planet. In addition, she offers a bit of background history on astrology.( Astrology has been in use by many cultures for several thousand years.) As a welcome plus, there is an ephemeris in the book as well, so you can easily look up your own birth date and see what planets were in what signs that day. If you have your birth certificate on hand this will be a real asset in erecting a natal chart.( Woolfolk covers this) If you don't have your birth certificate-there are ways to order it via the Bureau of Vital Statistics. Please know that in astrology-every second can make a difference when constructing a chart so don't assume you can just guess at your birth time. Woolfolk briefly touches on aspects( Squares- Conjunctions-Oppositions etc)and while aspects are an integral part of astrology, bear in mind she is not looking to cover too many things in depth. After all- her book is a basic introduction to astrology. Anything you glean from this book- you will then move up the rung in knowledge and choose another book to take your education even further. However, anyone considering buying this book should keep in mind that this is the book to get if you are just getting your feet wet in the deep waters of astrology. I don't use the term deep waters lightly. At times, the study of astrology can get extremely complex and deep. I have seen people get turned off to learning, because they started with books either too advanced for them -or- got their hands on some poorly written beginner books. What a shame. If you want something painless- that will not leave you feeling frustrated, give this book a try. The only thing I don't agree with Woolfolk on, is the title of her book. This book should be on every beginners' bookshelf- but it certainly does NOT hold anywhere near enough astrological information to be the only astrology book you will ever need. It should only be that simple! :-) As I said in my title-this is NOT the only book you need to learn astrology- but it should the first one to buy.Read full review
