Phantasy Star Online is what I consider to be a great classic of gaming. And while I personally prefer the GameCube edition (Phantasy Star Online 1 and 2 Plus), Phantasy Star Online for the Dreamcast is definitely a good second best. I bought my copy for the Dreamcast in order to have a back up (I have played my GameCube version excessively and the wear and tear is starting to show). But for anyone who is simply a collector or looking for good Dreamcast games to enjoy the nostalgia or to have the opportunity to play some true classics, Phantasy Star Online is a good option to show off some of the great features Dreamcast had to offer in its time. The game's positives and negatives mostly balance out: a main feature of the game is playing through the same environments multiple times to level up and get further in the game. While this may sound familiar to the average MMO player, it can become tedious. To counter this, there is a large variety of side missions for the single player experience that takes the player from basic "fetch quest" missions, all the way to deep missions further into the game that bring great depth to the story and lore of the Phantasy Star universe. It works itself in well with the action to make a compelling story that rarely breaks the action. It also offers increased rewards the longer you play. Starting out on normal difficulty, most players will only find the standard sets of weapons. But every difficulty level after normal increases the chance of finding rarer and rarer weapons, reserving the best and most rare for the highest difficulty. This adds the incentive to continue playing just to see what great new weapons and abilities the player can earn down the line.Read full review
Being the Dreamcast nut that I am, I couldn't resist buying this game. Online, this game is as fun as online MUDs (which is similar to Diablo, not a whole lot of players to a game, but enough to keep you happy) can get. As soon as you get online, you spawn in a lobby to socialize in. If you don't want to stay and chat, talk to a lobby receptionist and you can either join or host a game. A game consists of you and 2-4 other people completing missions, destroying monsters, trading, and other things. SEGA closed down the official servers, but you can still play online by following the directions here: http://www.schtserv.com/ (Schthack unofficial PSO server.) Offline is essentially the same, only there is no player to player interaction and it's REALLY hard all alone. The graphics aren't the best that the Dreamcast has to offer, seeing how it was designed with a dial-up connection in mind, but are ultimately done well for the lower end of the graphical spectrum. The music is among the best on the Dreamcast, one part orchestra, one part futuristic, it's something you'd love to buy a soundtrack for. The gameplay is very well done, the only complaint I had was that you can't jump. That's it. You can do anything else, fight, play casino games with other people, play a soccer style game, and much, much more. Highly recommended to anybody who likes MMORPG/MUDs, Beautiful music, Sonic Team productions and the Dreamcast. P.S. If you are unable to connect to the Internet on your Dreamcast, you can buy the PC version and follow the instructions on how to connect at http://www.schtserv.com/ .Read full review
Phantasy Star Online is one of the best RPG games to play on the Sega Dreamcast or at least we think so. The beginning of the game starts out with a dying planet and the people construct two gigantic colony spaceships and they set out in order to find a new home and a chance to survive. The people find a suitable planet, Ragol and the lead vessel called Pioneer 1 sets up a settlement there. This almost can remind you of the Mayflower. However, when Pioneer 2 arrived, something strange had happened, it seems a unexplained explosion rocks Ragol and destroys the colony:(. You will be sent out by your government and determine what has happened. This is a very lovely game and we have tried it and it is just as good as any other good RPG game. You will be able to create you character by selecting from a list of classes and races. In addition you will be able to cast magical spells in Real-time combat. Thanks to this being an online game you should be able to join up to with 3 other players or you can play as a single-player if you wish, Enjoy:)!Read full review
This is a game that I un intentionally got addicted to some years back. It an awesome rpg that Takes place on ragol. as the pioneer 2 arrives at the planet of ragol an explosion occurs your character is sent down to investigate. The main story is told thru a holographic messages on the ground left by a legendary hunter. The gameplay is easy enough. depending on your character type you almost always have a chance to play through the game with just the right difficulty. I highly reccomend it to anyone looking for a good rpg expirence.
Everything was absolutely perfect aside from a minor crack in the front case but it's easy to overlook. Really happy with it.

What can I possibly say about a game that truly defined online console play? It's this game that we have to thank for the creation of Xbox Live, Playstation Home, and Wii Online. An EXCELLENT storyline, the ability to team up with people from all over the world, custom create your own characters, upgradeable patches for things like weapons, armor, and abilities...what more could you possibly want?
I bought this game for my 12 year old son. He had been playing Phantasy Star on XBOX so I picked this up more for him than anything. We're hoping to get access to online play through a homebrew site. To me, the graphics of the Sega Dreamcast games smoke most any Playstation game I've seen. Phantasy Star is no exception. Definitely worth owning if you have the dreamcast.
