Fountains of wayne can take fairly mundane subject matter and turn into a 3 minute masterpiece that stays in your head long after you changed CDs. The hit Stacy's Mom ranks as a good song, but not the best on the CD. On a lot of CD's I buy, I might like a lot of the songs, but there's always a few that don't grab me and I end up skipping them on replay. Welcome Interstate Managers is one the rare CDs where I look forward to hearing every song. My faves include "All Kinds of Time", "Fire Island", and "Hackensack"
I love "Welcome Interstate Managers." These guys have a formula; they sound like everybody in the power pop world, yet are remarkably original. Each song stands on its own. There's even a country ditty, showing that these guys have a great sense of humor, guts, or maybe a perverse combination of the two. Their sweet, cohesive harmonies make each track pop, like a 100 mph fast ball landing dead-center in the catcher's mit, right down the pike. I'm getting close to having the entire catalogue. Of course, one can't listen to "Fountains of Wayne" routinely. I save those listening moments for special occasions like a 70 degree spring day with sun the sun roof down, a celebratory musical romp after closing a business deal, or when I need a pick-me-up after a long, hard day. Always, these guys make me wonder if they are smart and having fun making fun--or are just sincerely cranking out what comes natural for the pure joy of it all. Though I wonder, it really doesn't matter. Does one analyze the intricacies of cotton candy or dissect the history of the carmeled apple when downing such sweetness. I DON'T THINK SO! Many moons ago I bought the "That Thing You Do" soundtrack, right after enjoying the movie. I was captivated by the soundtrack's creator's ability to evoke such radio-ready confection. Little did I know at the time that I would later become such a fan of Adam Schlesinger and Chris Collingwood's emerging band. In retrospect, it's easy to see why they were selected to be involved in that project.Read full review
CD scratched and would not play without skipping. I only paid a couple of dollars so no need to return.

Fountains of Wayne is a band known for its catchy tunes and smart, off-beat, often hilarious lyrics. They are at their peak here on "Welcome Interstate Managers." I highly recommend this CD. For the "If you like this, you might also like that" crowd, I would classify Fountains of Wayne as a slightly less silly and eclectic They Might Be Giants or a more radio-friendly Too Much Joy. Fun stuff, and worth a listen!
