A rookie fireman (Richard Roundtree) is faced with the challenge of his life, being the first African American among an all-white squad filled with hostility and race rage. He discovers soon enough that he is filling the shoes of a much beloved colleague who lost his life in a fire believed to be set by a black man. The sharp-witted newcomer must not only be dedicated to his job, but also to influencing the prejudicial notions of his co-workers.
