Product Information
World War II Morocco springs to life in Michael Curtiz's (THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD, YANKEE DOODLE DANDY) classic love story. Colorful characters abound in Casablanca, a waiting room for Europeans trying to escape Hitler's war-torn Europe. Humphrey Bogart plays Richard "Rick" Blaine, a cynical but good-hearted American whose café is the gathering place for everyone from the French Police to the black market to the Nazis. When his long-lost love, Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman), surfaces in Casablanca with her Resistance leader husband, Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid), Rick is pulled into both a love triangle and a web of political intrigue. Ilsa and Victor need to escape from Casablanca, and Rick may be the only one who can help them. The question is, will he? Top-notch performances include Claude Rains as the chief of the French police and the major authority figure in Unoccupied France, Peter Lorre as the doomed Senor Ugarte, Sydney Greenstreet as Senor Ferrari, and Dooley Wilson as Rick's loyal friend and the café's pianist, Sam. The mesmerizing musical score, by Max Steiner, along with the well-structured plot, flawless acting, and unforgettable dialogue makes this one of the best films of all time.
"If you could play it for her you can play it for me"
The above title should be the real way to remember this classic best movie ever made to be seen. No, the line "Play it again, Sam,"does not exist, but just every other famous lines we all remember does such as "Round up the usual suspects!" The actual move, Casablanca, first released in 1942, has some mistakes as do all movies, but I would have to say for young and old, for the person who lived through it to the acid rocker, this is THE BEST MOVE EVER MADE TO BE SEEN! Is it a love story? Yes! Is it a story of intrigue? Yes! Is it pure entertainment YES! IS IT HUMPHREY BOGART AND INGRID BERGMAN AT THEIR BEST? YES! YES! YES!
The additional disc has the most interesting information yet from interviews with children of the stars, home movies of the stars, what it was like at home with Bogard! Also, a SCENE BY SCENE ANALYSIS BY ROGER EBERT! There is so much more, too!
I WOULD SAY, THIS WAS THE MOST THOUGHTFUL BIRTHDAY GIFT(MY WIFE PRESENTED IT TO ME FOR MY BIRTHDAY) I HAVE EVER RECEIVED. IT BRINGS TEARS TO MY EYES WHEN I WATCH IT (NOT BAD FOR A CRUSTY 56 YEAR OLD GUY)!
If you ever want to purchase a movie set or just a movie that will last a lifetime of watching, this is it! No, there is no"I'll be back special effects" blow em up stuff! Just pure talent: great acting, superb cinematography and absolutely academy award winning directing with Michael Curtiz. He never did anything without a meaning; suit the action to the word, the word to the action.
ALL IN ALL, I'LL BE TRITE, A TRIPLE THUMBS UP!!!!!Read full review
CASABLANCA - A Best Loved Film 1942 - This is surely an all time favorite of many people although I don't think it is quite up there with Gone With the Wind. This 1942 drama received Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director(Michael Curtiz), and Best Screenplay. It was also nominated for but did not win, Best Actor (Humphrey Bogart), Best Supporting Actor (Claude Rains), Best Cinematography, Best Musical Score(Max Steiner)and best editing. Those are some pretty big accomplishments. Humphrey Bogart stars as a cafe owner Rick, with Ingrid Bergman as his lost love Ilsa. Paul Henreid is her husband. Their lives become entwined in the exotic Moroccan City of Casablanca during the early days of WWII. There are several quotes made very famous by this movie. You may know them & not even know where they came from. "I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship" "Here's looking at you kid," & "Play it Again Sam". Speaking of Play it Again Sam, Dooley Wilson (Sam) was a professional drummer who faked playing the piano. Most people don't know that, good trivia question! This movie would be a welcome addition to any classic movies collection. Enjoy!Read full review
To be perfectly honest, my husband (age 42) and I (age 41) had never seen this movie up until a month ago. We have NetFlix and were able to view it immediately without having to wait for it to be mailed. WE FELL IN LOVE WITH THE MOVE... and yes, he is a macho guy! I'm actually getting this for him as a Valentine! (chocolates are too fattening)
It has ALL the elements of a great movie - love, conflict, adventure, suspense, and even humor! One of the funniest characters is Captain Renault (played by Claude Rains) who is demanding that everyone leave the establishment on "suspicion of gambling" while he is also collecting his winnings.
I can't say enough about this movie. Ilsa is beautiful, conflicted, complicated, strong, and graceful. Rick is a man's man.
Watch it... you won't be disappointed "knock on wood!"Read full review
After watching this, I fell asleep on the floor because i'm too poor for a couch. I awoke hours later dreaming I was in the movie and the piano player gave me the winning lottery numbers. I played them 4 days ago and won $500,000 dollars. Wow! Then I watched it again and during my after movie dream, I saw a phone number....it was so clear I couldn't forget it! When I woke up, I called the number and you won't. Believe it, but Jennifer Anniston answered! No way, you say- but we talked awhile and really hit it off! She likes the movie, too and has had similar experiences. There's something magical about the piano music in Casablanca that puts some people in a altered state and they get in touch with the forces of the universe.......I'm flying out to socal to have lunch with Jen , maybe take her dogs for a walk, too. Best money ever spent on eBay.Read full review
CASABLANCA: one of the great films for a good reason
DVD set described accurately by brrobi7110 who declined to also leave positive feedback for me. CASABLANCA is one of the great, classic movies when Hollywood productions were entertainment art with great actors/actresses in epic stories of worth rather than the generally profanity-laced, excessively-violent, cinematic soft-porn of the 21st Century.
