I picked up an audio much abridged version that whetted my appetite for a more complete version. This more than met my curiosity. The tangled web created by the characters and the tradgedies that result show how decisions can complicate lives other than our own. The acting is superb, even to the bit players, but as I expected Ciaran Hinds, as Michael Henchard, just pulled out all the stops in his characterizations, I felt pathos for him, even while he was making disasterous decisions. Jodhi May & James Purefoy (Elizabeth & Donal) are great counterpoints. This story is one many lessons can be drawn from, consequences are great teachers! Highly reccommend this story.
I purchased this mini series because I had read the book a couple years ago, and I was impressed with the quality of the film. The acting is amazing. I thought all the characters were depicted very well. They left out a couple parts from the book, but over all it was very good. However if you are a person who is expecting a happy go lucky british mini series like Pride and Prejudice, this is not a happy story. Thomas Hardy and Jane Austen are as different as night and day. I like them both, but they are very different. This is the type of movie I would watch when I want to indulge a melancholy mood on a rainy day and eat chocolate. I don't know if this will actually help anyone or not, but I hope it does.
Shakespearean melodrama - really well done - great character development
