Jean-Pierre Melville's hugely influential film remains a cornerstone of the crime genre. Recently released from prison, thief Corey (Alain Delon) finds himself caught up in a dangerous triangle with a mysterious woman (Gian Maria Volonte) and an ex-cop with some issues of his own (Yves Montand).     Another Melville Masterpiece

    Melville made six gangster genre films. The first three were in black & white and the last three were in color. This one is number five of the six. While the last one "Un Flic" was a disappointment for many (including Melville), it was not such a let down for me. I'm sure that most, if not all, will agree that "Le Cercle Rouge" is a far better film. Another plus that makes this film special is that it also stars Yves Montand. His performance alone is worth the price of admission. Even without Montand, the film is superb film making and a must see for all fans of Melville and/or French gangster films from the twentieth century.

    Essential Melville

    This DVD isn’t too rare. However finding one that’s relatively inexpensive is another story. Which is typical of some Criterion movies that are out of print. If you are reading this, I’m sure you’re already aware of this. I had been searching for a Criterion edition of LE CERCLE ROUGE for quite some time. Finally saw one for a reasonable price. Great movie that was well worth the wait for. If you find one for the right price, grab it. You won’t be disappointed.
