Quentin Tarantino returns to the crime genre once again with this adaptation of Elmore Leonard's RUM PUNCH. Transplanting Leonard's crime story from Miami to Tarantino's city of choice, Los Angeles, JACKIE BROWN cruises along smoothly, much like the film's 1970s soul soundtrack. The film follows Jackie Brown (Pam Grier), a flight attendant who makes extra cash by running drugs and cash for sleazebag Ordell Robbie (Samuel L. Jackson). When Jackie sees the opportunity to make off with a large chunk of change, she begins to play everyone around her, including two detectives who are threatening her with jail time if she doesn't rat out Ordell, and a sympathetic bail bondsman (Robert Forster) who finds himself falling for Jackie. Tarantino sets a pace that is laid back and groovy, building to an eventual climax that determines whether or not Jackie walks away with the booty. In much the same way that Tarantino resuscitated John Travolta's career with PULP FICTION, he does the same thing here with Grier and Forster. Overall, JACKIE BROWN is a less in-your-face effort than Tarantino's previous films, but it's this downshift in gears that makes it so refreshing.

What are you saying?..Tarantino's world is a cool place
If you were to take this film, and compare it to Tarantino's earlier work, you'd never guess they came from the same director and yes baby he did a great job with "Jackie." This is one of those films which is strange but yet captivating. You'll definitely feel as though you are watching a "Blaxploitation" flick to the point that you'll be wondering what corner Richard Roundtree was hiding behind. Tarantino slows down a little and shows his skill at plotting an entertaining tale that doesn't tax your patience. In here, you do get less blood and more characterizations than usual and is unlike either of his first 2 movies. In Jackie Brown, Tarantino takes us for a ride as we follow Jackie Brown (Pam Grier), a flight attendant helping an arms dealer named Ordell Robbie (Samuel L. Jackson) get money where it needs to be. After a flight, she is pull aside by two cops, one being Ray Nicolet (Michael Keaton), who find the cash she is smuggling in for Ordell. Now she faces jail time and Ordell must get rid of somebody who might snitch. What happens now is the bail bondsman Max Cherry (Robert Forster) and Brown team up to mess with Ordell and his two pot smoking companions, Melanie (Bridget Fonda) and Louis Gara (Robert De Niro). Now it's a nice plot of how Ordell wants the half a million dollars he has coming to him with these arms deals and how Jackie Brown is the only connection between Ordell and the police and Cherry. This movie received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor (Robert Forster) and many good reviews. Forster isn't the only one giving a great performance. De Niro, Fonda, Jackson, Grier, Keaton, even Chris Tucker who is in the movie for probably less than five or ten minutes gives a notable performance. The whole ensemble is incredibly well casted and deserves to be recognized. However, this movie is uniquely Quentin T. and exhibits his versatile film making style. When he directs he allows his imagination free rein to experiment and explore. Each of his directorial efforts has been unique, and "Jackie Brown" is another successful experiment. This movie does have great dialogue. Not surprising considering this WAS an Elmore Leonard book with Tarantino doing the scripting. Both men have quite a talent for what they do. It is also clear that Tarantino loves what he does, sometimes a little too much. I have the soundtrack and just loved it. If you own it you will see how great the songs fit in and the dialogue. Loved the scene when they're all going to the mall at the end, and DeNiro's car is playing "Midnight Confession," and Forster's car is playing the Delfonics, "Didn't I Blow Your Mind" (a song that desperately needed re-discovery, thank you Quentin), and Jackie's car is playing "Street life!" and when Robert Forster first meets Jackie as he's bailing her out and "Natural High" comes on!!!!. Yes, QT is BRILLIANT when it comes to the use of music in his films and soundtracks. At the end of this, all the adventures and bizarre paths taken by these characters converge into a great film. What more can I say but to highly recommended this film along with the soundtrack.Read full review

Another great Tarantino flick
Jackie Brown is emblematic of Quentin Tarantino's love of 1970's crime movies. This is further illustrated by a script with a head strong, African American woman as the lead character. With many movies made by Tarantino, the character's do not display the traditional moral "good" or "bad" traits. Most of them are both criminals and heroes in their own minds and in the view of the audience. The suave, cool 'bad guy', played exceedingly well by Samuel L. Jackson, is reason enough to watch and own this movie. The movie builds to a strong climax, aided by the long stretches of intelligent and entertaining dialogue between pairs of characters, in which the the villian is dealt with and the hero wins. While at times the movie may seem stereotypical or simplistic, the writing and editing that have become Tarantino's calling card, make this one of Tarantino's better, though usually underrated, films.Read full review

Jackie supplements her meager income as a stewardess by smuggling cash into the U.S. for gunrunner Ordell Robbie--until the day an ATF agent and an L.A. cop bust her at the airport. The cops pressure her to help them bring down Ordell, threatening prison if she refuses. With a sympathetic bailbondsman, who understands her restlessness only too well, Jackie arrives at a bold almost foolhardy plan to play off these opposing forces against each other. Matters are complicated by Ordell's confederates, Louis Gara and Melanie Ralston who have agendas of their own. By appearing to cooperate with both sides, Jackie attempts to outfox them both and walk away with a half million dollar payday. This is the movie that proves Tarantino is the real thing.

Tarantino's "hang out" film, Jackie Brown
"Jackie Brown" is a fantastic film. Sometimes overshadowed by Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction" and "Reservoir Dogs," it should not be underestimated or overlooked. The characters in this film are superb - mostly thanks to Tarantino's unprecedented writing, but also due to its flawlessly put together cast. Pam Grier and Robert Forster give brilliant performances, not to mention the always hysterical and super-cool Samuel L. Jackson, who delivers his lines with such precise rhythm and personality that the viewer is dying to cross over to the other side of the screen and just hang out with him. There is a lot going on plot-wise, so the first viewing of "Jackie Brown" is going to be fast-paced and energetic. True fans of the movie, however, know that it gets better and better with each additional viewing, because the dialogue becomes more resonant, the characters become more familiar, and many amusing details begin to pop up unexpectedly. This is why "Jackie Brown" is Tarantino's ultimate "hang out" film: you will love the characters so much with each consecutive viewing, that you will find yourself going back time and time again to the movie just because you want to spend more time with them. All in all, this motion picture is absolutely terrific and a must-have for any movie buff or Tarantino fan. Three thumbs up!Read full review
