The original Outer Limits series brought so many sci-fi ideas into mainstream thought: time travel, teleportation, telekinesis, consciousnesses expansion, faster-than-light travel, as well as examining social prejudices and xenophobias. This series brought many sci-fi writers to us, such as Harlan Ellison, and others. The hour-long format allowed the examination of these subjects in-depth in ways The Twilight Zone never could. And this was before Star Trek. It’s a true original.

The first show for this series, called The Galaxy Being, contains themes of family discord, intelligent alien life, science, and the confronting of inexplicable destructive force are touched upon with highly effective dramatic acting. It makes you feel the shock and wonder the characters are feeling, and challenges you intellectually in ways that leaves you thinking long after the episode is done. The show has a combination of top notch acting, excellent directing and script writing, and careful use of camera effects combining to create an atmosphere that makes this, and every episode in the series, riveting. These are qualities that rise above any particular date at which the drama was filmed, and make a series like this one timeless. The Outer Limits holds up better than some of the modern series, because of the care and respect given to the material. The series has well known star actors including; Ed Asner, Martin Sheen, Robert Duval, Martin Landau and Leonard Nimoy. Great science fiction author Harlan Ellison wrote the show's stories, "Demon With a Glass Hand" and "Soldier". The episodes are stand-alone drama confronting the unexplained. It is a journey worth taking. This is a great investment in a highly entertaining and thought provoking series. This classic series was originally telecast back in the good, old days when TV series that got the go-ahead to run in the first place was given 21 or more weeks to find an audience. DO NOT ATTEMPT..... to do that nowadays, unless you're willing to listen to the most profanity-laced language from advertisers who demand as many viewers watching THEIR shows as possible. The Outer Limits must have found its audience at just the right time and on just the right channel. Some of the actors, including Robert Culp (I Spy), Donald Pleasance (Halloween and it's sequels) David McCallum (Man From UNCLE and NCIS) and Cliff Robertson (PT 109) contributed very memorable guest spots on one of the most thought-provoking and engaging performances on the then small screen. If you enjoy sci-fi TV, If you'd like to see today's actors doing what did best, BEFORE they were famous.... You owe it to yourself and any friends over the age of 15 to watch this series. I say over 15 because it may be too intense for younger minds. Also, some of the makeup used may cause nightmares for them. MZRead full review

...just pop in these DVDs and let them control all that you see and hear. This collection includes all 32 of the first season episodes of this classic series that ran on the then-fledgling ABC network form 1963-1965. Some may see it as a knock-off of the Twilight Zone, but it is more a peer than an imitator. I have both seasons 1 and 2 and my only regret is that there are only 49 episodes. It should be noted that the original Outer Limits series has been released in its entirety on DVD twice. The first time it was released in two volumes--season one and season two. The second time, it was released in three volumes, dividing season one into two 16-episode packages, dubbed Volume 1 and Volume 2. All 17 of the second season episodes were re-issued as Volume 3. It's the same discs, just different packaging. In both releases, the discs are two-sided with four episodes per side.Read full review
