He portrays real-life bounty hunter Ralph "Papa" Thorson, who made a long career out of apprehending more than 5,000 criminals and bail jumpers. Thorson's tough antics (featuring a few memorable car chases) are tempered by his touching relationship with his pregnant wife Dotty (Kathryn Harrold)--and his love of antique toys and Tchaikovsky. McQueen's last film, a well done pursuit film
Steve McQueen, in his last movie, plays the character of Ralph "Papa" Thorsen, the true story about a good-natured, but persistent, bounty hunter, who is not easily put off when fugitives or their family or their friends resist Thorsen's efforts to return the miscreants to custody to await trial. This is a well done pursuit film as we get to follow Thorsen as he pursues his quarries anywhere they go, through cities, out to the countryside, and across state lines. Good natured, because T does not abuse his captives after overcoming their resistance to capture. He is firm, but civil. T seems to have only one gear, forward, to capture his subjects, and is oblivious to everything else around him, including the fugitive's number, their size, their weapons or their political influence. It is also cringeworthy to watch Thorsen's poor driving skills, during his pursuits, especially when he keeps grinding the gears in his own vehicle, a gorgeous 1951 Chevrolet Styleline Deluxe convertible, or the destruction of the vehicles around him during his pursuits. McQueen's Thorsen is a difficult personality in his fondness for old things his resistance for the new, who is single-minded about his pursuit business, and is scary to watch behind the wheel of any vehicle, but is well-liked by his friends, his employer, his girl friend and even his captures.
