Woody Allen shines in the ensemble cast of this 1986 movie composed mainly of a screwed up family headed by Evan (Lloyd Noland) and Norma (Maureen O'Sullivan), who also have problems. Hannah (Mia Farrow) is considered the most stable of the three sisters, but she has been married twice--once to Mickey (Woody Allen) and then to Elliot(Michael Caine). Her main fault is that she is too kind. Mickey is a hypochondriac, and his episodes of doctor visits, MRIs, and biopsies provide a huge hilarity to the movie. Elliot is wandering and thinks that he is in love with Hannah's sister Lee (Barbara Hershey), but once he has sex with her, his guilt nearly kills him. Lee (Barbara Hershey) is living with (not married) to Frederick (Max Von Sydow), who is habitating in a philosophical dream world. Her one day stand with Eliott provides her with lots of guilt too. It explodes in a restaurant scene with the three sisters. Holly (Diane Wieste) is the most neurotic of the sisters. She has a huge inferiority complex, and her various attempts to enter show business as a singer and as a playwright provide some more comedy for the movie. She also has had a horrible date with Mickey, but then they try again, which provides a huge ironic ending to the movie. This was a huge movie for Woody Allen and won an Oscar for him as Best Screenplay. Additionally, Michael Caine won an Oscar asBest Supporting Actor, and Diane Wieste won Best Supporting Actress. This movie is a real treat, and hopefully most New Yorkers are not this screwed up.Read full review
