Every time I watch this movie I catch new things. Marvelously complex, yet centered on the most basic of human emotions, this movie follows an anniversary party of a famous-but-fading starlet and her director/author/possibly gay lover. Warning: Spoiler Alert! The couple desparately want a baby, yet the starlet has had a secret abortion. The lover seems to be the stable one, yet he fails to respond to his suicidal sister's many phone messages, and has yet to find his niche in life. A classic relationship that we can all relate to, if we're willing to look into our own dark corners. This movie doesn't shy away from dealing with difficult subject matter, and each character is fully drawn. These are real, unique people, and we're getting to see their honest inner lives. A movie I can watch again and again without tiring of it.Read full review
I came upon this movie by accident. Written and directed By Jennifer Jason Leigh and Alan Cumming. I didn't start watching it from the begining so I was a bit apprehensive to watch it even though It was had started maybe 15 minutes in. I was immediately drawn in.First off I loved the House it takes place in. It's Beautiful! But what got me interested is ALL of the actors in this Film. BIG NAMES. It was like having dessert. Jennifer Jason Leigh is great in this film. She plays an actress (Sally) who is married to a director (Joe )Alan Cumming. They have been separated for a while and reunite to have this anniversary party. They invite their very close friends and many industry colleagues. Also invited are the next door neighbors Interior decorator Monica and her Writer husband Russ. Which they have a bad relationship with due to issues with Sally and Joes dog OTIS. All of them are brought together to take part in the couple reuniting to celebrate their anniversary. The only turn off to me was the character played by actress Phoebe Cates who plays ( Sophia) her character comes off as snobbish, shallow and very judgmental. Her real life husband Kevin Klein (Cal Gold) play's an actor in the film. He is witty and funny as usual. He always brings a bit of class to all the films that he is in. Gwynneth Paltrow who plays (Sky) is also invited to the party By Joe. To the disaproval of Sally his wife. She is also unhappy that his best friend ( Gina) Jennifer Beals is there as well. After having champagne and good conversations they have a Game of charades and Go on to have dinner and then all of their friends come together in the evening and each gives a speech or song about the couple they all Love and came to celebrate their special day with.. The movie just gets better and better after Gwynneth Paltrow Brings a little treat as an anniversary gift that starts to make things happen. They all gather by the pool and all of them get loose and the fun begins. The neighbor Russ who does not approve of his wife's decision to partake in Sky's gift decides to leave the party. His wife on the other hand goes to get her bathing suit and comes back to join the fun. which is great. Sally and her friend Sophia have a conversation In sally's room about how she HATES Gina. They also discuss Sally & Joe moving to Paris And Sally wanting to have kids. To which Sophia reminds Sally about her MAN- CHILD husband not being responsible enough to have a child. The movie gets interesting after their neighbor accidentally lets their beloved OTIS out the gate. Where there are Coyotes in the Canyon. Joe and Sally have a big shouting match about their marriage and a secret that Sally has been keeping comes to a head making Joe very angry. She in turn reminds him of the neglectful way he has been treating his sister Lucy.At the end of the film Joe goes through a traumatic event with a family member and Sally has to be there for him and establish her position as WIFE with Gina his friend who try's to make a decision for him but Sally lets Gina know she is just his best friend NOT HIS WIFE.In the end all is well. This is A MUST SEE film. Many little things going on that keep you really entertained. Jennifer Jason Leigh and Alan Cumming are amazing actors and are joined by other great actors to make this a wonderful, entertaining film. Great to watch with all of your friends. I highly recommend you rent/ buy this one! I also suggest buying the Soundtrack to this film It's greRead full review
