Joel and Ethan Coen (FARGO, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN) change the face of independent cinema forever with their brillantly, inventive debut film about a backwoods bar owner (Dan Hedaya) who hires a sleazy private dectective (the connivingly corrupt M. Emmet Walsh) to murder his wife (Frances McDormand, in her film debut) and her boyfriend (John Getz). I don't know what to say about BLOOD SIMPLE, it is simply a msterful Texan noir with ironic, witty dialogue, four-dimensional characters, a sweat-filled, brooding atmosphere highed by cinematographer Barry Sonnenfeld, and a schitzophrenic, but self-conscious soundtrack from composer Carter Burwell with songs provided by Patsy Cline and The Four Tops. I also wanted to give credit for John Getz's naturally-gifted performance as a bartender who unexpectivedly plunges into a complicated web of double-crosses and compliations. As an actor, he always been underrated and underappreciated for his work in THE FLY, and to a lesser extent MEN AT WORK. Come on Hollywood, take advantage of this man's unexplored talent already! In summing up BLOOD SIMPLE, it is among the finest modern noirs of the past thirty years.Read full review
This is one of those movies that you are almost contemplating turning off just before the climax and ending of the movie. If you keep watching you will be satisfied, if you don't you may regret it. The movie was a bit slow paced so if you are impatient I wouldn't recommend it, but it is good for those who favor the independent flick that you have to appreciate and have a taste for. I would call it a good love triangle gone seriously wrong movie, and it's 4/5 stars if that's what you're into.
I was happy with it. I saw the movie once a few years ago. It's a good cult movie like those old film noir movies.

Here's a movie that's not well-known, yet it shows signs of greatness from the genius movie team Joel and Ethan Coen. The movie is an exploration of film noir, and is a very good one at that. Frequent Coen movie star Frances McDormand plays the lead role, and Tex Cobb plays the villain out to get her. Although the music can be annoying at times (it's almost entirely the same song played over and over), the suspense just might kill you before the movie is over. A must have for any Coen brothers fan!
This is a very good example of dark humor and film noir. I'm pretty sure it's the first Cohen brothers film also.
