Space 1999 is a classic. 1970's hip culture's view of the future including disaster for thrills. The costumes are typical of the polister fad going down in the '70's. Stage acting by the two main stars tends to lead to pastic characterization. Premium cardboard stage and props are a pleasure to witness from a 2000's frame of mind. Enjoyable plots, though streched petty thin, keeps one coming back for more. One must keep in mind this IS a piece of history; to be watched for entertainment purposes only. Picking up on basic scientific facts thrown out at the viewer during the program are just a touch of more humour from the show.
I grew up watching Space:1999 and I still like it. Now, it is by no means the greatest sci-fi show there ever was. But there's a special something about this series that has endured- as evidenced by the legions of fans that are still growing in numbers. Space:1999 was set on Moonbase Alpha in (gasp!) the year 1999. On September 13th of that year, a series of nuclear explosions on the far side of the moon propelled it out of orbit and off into deep space. The two year series dealt with the inhabitants of the moonbase trying to cope and survive in the strange, mysteriousness of space. The series was produced by Gerry Anderson ( of Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet fame) and starred Martin Landau and Barbara Bain (Mission:Impossible). It aired long after Star Trek: TOS and well before Star Wars and was the most expensive sci-fi show of it's time on television. Modern day sci-fi has lost it's sense of wonder, I believe. Some of it is cold and well, too technical for ordinary people to relate to it. I believe that's why classic sci-fi and Space:1999 in particular has endured despite it's sometimes impossible stories. It had captured a sense of mysticism about space and it's exploration (even if it was involuntary on the part of the inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha!). The DVD's are a wonderful issue and pay tribute to the series quite nicely. Space:1999 never quite garnered the respect that other sci-fi shows did, but it has always been a great sci-fi show and worth being in any collection.Read full review

I never saw another science fiction series as engaging and far out as this series. The characters involved in this particular sci-fi show are even more warm and welcoming than many of the actors and characters from Star Trek. Highly recommended.

I have been a nut for scifi since early grade school. I remember the hype when this series first came out. The episodes were fun to watch even if the scientific accuracy was low to non-existant. (That seemed to be the hallmark of all early scifi). At times, the plot, the acting and the drama were all a bit corny. Yet I am tickled to have at least the first set of this series in my video collection. Time and money permitting, I will likely add more sets in the future. A good series to own and watch again!
