It is the 1980's and in the Soviet Union there is total control of the sable pelt trade. Sable hats, coats, or for that matter anything to do with the fur of sables, can only be obtained one way. Anyone caught trying to export live sables will be sentenced to death. Arkady Renko (William Hurt) is a Moscow police inspector. He has been called out to Gorky Park where three frozen corpses have been found, all faceless! This looks like the work of the KGB, and everyone is anxious to get rid of this case. Not Renko. He is a cop, and three people have been murdered. As he works the case, he finds out that one of the men was an American, and the girl and other guy were Russian. He also develops a lead to another girl, Valeria (Joanna Pacula). He can't get her to admit anything or to trust him. Through the help of a facial reconstructive anthropologist he is able to put faces to the dead. Valeria finally relents when she sees the faces of her friends who were supposed to have already gone to America, and tells him what he wants to know. The American and her other two friends were working with a wealthy American to smuggle six live sables out of Russia for a lot of money, and exit from the country. The buyer, a very rich sable fur importer played by Lee Marvin. He is very well traveled within the group of crooked politicians and KGB officials. Apparently he is having to pay off everyone to get furs and is trying to get live animals to breed. With the help of an American policeman (Brian Dennehy) who was the dead American boy's father, Renko works his way into this complicated case fraught with political danger to get his man. This is a good movie with an intelligent plot. I enjoyed it a lot.Read full review
One of the best espionage movies of the 1980s. William Hurt, the Russian detective vs. Lee Marvin as the American assassin. Classic!

I watched this movie in the mid 80s, not long after it came out on VHS . It was a great example of the depths that people would go to trying to escape from the communist regime in the Soviet Union. If you enjoy movies with intrigue and action, then I highly recommend it.
