"The American Experience" is a series that appears on PBS. Included in this box set are the documentaries about 3 Republican presidents who made some sort of impact upon American culture (whether positive or negative). PBS wisely uses a broad lens to examine these presidencies with balanced perspectives. The first US president in this series of profiles is Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was the 34th president for 2 terms (8 years). Eisenhower was called Ike. He'd been a war general whose stabilizing persona greatly appealed to the American public. Next, is the most controversial for PBS to present in a balanced way: Richard Millhouse Nixon, the 37th US president. Although a well seasoned diplomat who worked with his Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger, to develop the best relationship with communist China the US ever enjoyed, his presidency will likely be remembered for its corruption. Called, "Tricky Dick," after his Vice President, Spiro Agnew, was removed from office, Nixon & Republican colleagues bugged the Democrats' conference at the Watergate Hotel, in Washington, DC. Then, Nixon had essential parts of his White House office tape recordings destroyed in order to cover-up his involvement & knowledge of those illegal activities. Nixon was impeached and made to resign. He had only won re-election after the Watergate affair. Ronald Reagan was an actor turned governor of California who was known for having a financial policy called, "trickle down economics." It involves giving to the richest because, supposedly, doing so will make the money 'trickle down' to the poorest. (Our current depression demonstrates how that Republican fiscal theory & praxis doesn't work--the rich only get richer while the poor become destitute). But, Reagan was best known for being "The Great Communicator." Using his acting skills, President Reagan was able to explain situations to the public in ways that made them feel as if they were part of their government. The 40th US president was caught dealing arms during what is called, "The Iran Contra Affair." Although he too betrayed the American people's trust, Reagan was able to place the blame upon a fall guy & escape justifiable consequences. There is also some question about whether he was lying about his involvement or actually couldn't remember because shortly afterwards, Ronald Reagan was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. Reagan was a popular 2 term president because he had such a charming personality and gift for talking with citizens. This is a collectible 4 disc box set for those who are interested in Americana~Read full review
