The 1943 classic Alfred Hitchcock movie. Filmed in New Jersey and Santa Rosa, California, it was nominated for a 1944 Oscar for Best Writing. Plot summary: The Newton family lead a quiet life in the North California town of Santa Rosa. The Newton's eldest daughter, 'young Charlie', decides that things need brightening up and resolves to contact her Uncle Charlie (after whom she is named) and invite him to stay. On arrival at the telegraph office she discovers he is already on his way. However, Uncle Charlie is being pursued by a couple of detectives who suspect him of being "The Merry Widow Murderer", an evil strangler wanted in connection with the deaths of several rich East coast widows.
This is an excellent suspense film, vintage Hitchcock including train scenes. Chilling because Charlie's family is so wholesome, small-town American. The juxtaposition of this sitcom family with menacing Uncle Charlie is jarring. When niece Charlie tells Uncle Charlie that she knows he has secrets --- before she actually knows anything --- the audience cringes, because it's obvious the niece has just put a target on her own back. My only (small) quibble with this film is the title. There is never a shadow of a doubt, because the opening scene reveals that Uncle Charlie is evil. The question is not IF he will turn on his own family, it's WHEN, and exactly how far he will go. Hitchcock, and Joseph Cotton, successfully sustain this tension throughout the film.
This was Mr. Hitchcock's favorite movie that he ever made, and I daresay, it has to be mine as well. Every member of the cast is perfect in their respective parts - Joseph Cotten plays a highly alluring villain, pretty Teresa Wright is perfectly poised as his adoring niece. I've seen this film dozens and dozens of times, and I never really tire of it. The acting is sincere and that I am enraptured with the family's Victorian styled home and the ambiance of Santa Rosa in the forties. It's a delight for the eyes, as well the mind for a suspenseful story that grips and rivets you from the very onset - if you've never seen it, allow yourself this treat - better than an old fashioned ice cream soda and no calories!
I absolutely love this movie! Actors are so so perfect! Always been one of my favorites and this order just made my day!
