This is an all-out, must-see classic with James Cagney, Pat O'Brian, and Humphrey Bogart!Cagney plays a hard-nosed, model-mob character who still keeps a soft spot in his heart for his childhood playmate and former hoodlem-turned-priest friend, Father Conolly, played by Pat O'Brian. Bogart plays third place as Sullivan's dirty attorney. This movie is perfectly appropriate for teaching abject lessons in morals and redemption, without an overtly heavy emphasis on religion itself. After being released from prison, Sullivan (Cagney)takes back up his glamorous, highrolling, and entirely illegal life. He is soon idolized by a bunch of deliquent boys, the "Dead End" kids, who even aid and abet Sullivan in his misdoings. Father Conolly seeks for his friend's eternal salvation, even when things get as bad as it possibly could for his old pal, Rocky Sullivan. He also seeks the eartly redemption of these hard-nosed, rough, but impressionable delinquents under his influence. It is in this final task that Father Conolly turns to Sullivan with a request, the greatest sacrifice Rocky Sullivan can make: His pride. The hairs will stand up on end and you will be left moved and wondering at the touching end scenes, pulled off brilliantly by Cagney! This is THE best Cagney movie ever. An absolute MUST HAVE!
