This movie is based on the true story of a young violin teacher in Harlem. Using the beauty of music, she teaches her class that they can be and do whatever they dream to be - if they're willing to put in the hard work to accomplish it. The film spans several years and shows her struggles with not only the parents, but with the board of education as well, who at one point vote to shut her class down due to budget constraints. Ultimately - if not predictably - (why else would there be a movie?) - she triumphs over all obstacles and her class takes the stage in Carnegie Hall for their major recital. It's a good story with a decent cast. I bought this movie as a gift to a friend who is a big Meryl Streep fan. She does some of her best work here.
This is a great family movie. I discovered it one afternoon while surfing the cable stations and I fell in love with it. The story is true and Meryl Streep is excellent in the starring role. I later learned that she learned to play the violin so that she could accurately portray the role. I bought the movie for my 9 year old niece who was taking violin lessons and I knew she would relate to it. The ending is inspirational.
My daughter and her husband are opening a music school in the city of Chicago. My daughter has started an after school violin program in the Chicago Public School system, and this movie hits close to home. We are a family of musicians, and have performed together for many public and private events over the past ten years. She had not seen this movie, so I bought it for her as a gift. It brought me to tears, the music is wonderful, the acting is superlative, and the message is powerful. Definitely a keeper.
Good quality "collector's series" dvd. Loved the film from beginning to end as well as the bonus material.
