This remake of an Academy Award winning film with the same name from the 1950s has great star-power. As a mysterious character similar to her role in "Basic Instinct," Sharon Stone as Nicole Horner plays a math teacher at a Catholic school for boys, St. Anselm School, in Pennsylvania. The school is run by Dr. Guy Baran (Chazz Palminteri)and is really owned by his x-nun wife Mia (Isabelle Adjani). Nicole has openly had an affair with Guy but still remains best friends with Mia, a really sickly woman but beautiful and rich. Guy is so evil and womanizing that the two women plot to kill him and do carry out the deed with poison and drowning, dumping his body in a wading pool at the school. But when the body fails to float to the surface, the mystery begins. It is more than Mia can take, so Nicole deals with Shirley Vogel (Kathy Bates), an assertive detective who savilly figures it all out. Up to this point, the movie is so well done that we are sitting on the edge of our seats waiting for a ghost, for someone to murder someone else, or for poor Mia to drop dead from fright. The music score and dark cinematography add to the terror and horror, and we fear that Ms. Vogel will catch our two ladies in their crime. But this movie has so many twists and turns that we have been deceived from the very beginning. The ending leaves much to be desired. I'm not going to tell what happens but it is overdone. Not that it couldn't happen this way, it could. But the filming is just not right. We leave the movie with a chuckle as to how such a brilliant plot could fizzle out this way. This movie is not for children. There is frontal nudity at the beginning of the movie. There is the implication that the two women might be lesbians, and they do kiss. The language is also very adult. But the first part of the ride is great!Read full review
I really liked this film. It is almost as good as the original. They did make a few changes in the story. But I like that idea as this ending was a bit of a suprise to the original. For me this was Sharon Stone's best film. Her acting was great, she looks gorgeous and I loved her outfits. I liked everyone in the cast. This was a suspenseful movie, well acted and fast moving. Recommended.

I'm not a fan of any of the cast players within this film. I'm not quite sure who to thank for the package that is "Diabolique". Perhaps the twisted screenplay adaptation? The Direction. The Acting. Any way one chooses to describe this film, you must include the following: Suspense. Sexy. Mystery. Dark. Entertaining. A great film all around. A rare case of the soup being MUCH better than the individual ingredients.
Fantastic thriller and suspense! Performance from all the actors were awesome!
