  • And now you know

If you are too young to remember Brigitte Bardot, you are not too young to fall in love with her. Look in the dictionary under "winsome." Then "vital." Or, perhaps, "natural." Natural love for life, and a guileless way of leading us into it. Brigitte had the good fortune of creating with superb directors and support teams. But we have the good fortune of becoming infected by her effortless laughter, her exquisite inflections, her charms held at just that distance that does the most good. There are days that need a peek of sunshine, days that benefit from a dash of rain. Add to that list a pinch of Bardot and you will have a set of cures to fit a day for use. Two minutes of this set, alone, are potent enough to keep it near to hand. Watch Brigitte dance that unexpected "Bamba" that seeps through the walls of her stowaway hotel room ("Please Not Now"), and you will need some strong sadness to put you back down on your feet so you can walk again! But that's OK. Float out of the room to place this set on the highest shelf--someplace easy to grab when you need another two minutes, or two hours, or a second chance at a life full of fresh good humor and saturating optimism. These films get into you, and they will leak out at chance moments ... in those furtive smiles you can't quite explain--smiles you are certain must be for some good reason. We pass such smiles along to strangers on sidewalks, seldom knowing where that pique and vigor came from in a tiny gust. I maintain that a fair number began with the darling of this set, and with the champions of her work (writers, directors, etc.) who knew we would all be just a bit more human and daring for having exhausted her talents--her sparkle remaining forever undiminished.
