If it isn't officially a cult classic, it's very close. Depp's portrayal of Hunter Thompson was a tribute to a lost friend in their wild youth.

I bought this dvd to add to my collection. Great movie but wish I purchased it elsewhere. Cuts and rips on the dvd case itself. The disc has too many surface straches to be considered in 'good' condition. Was very disappointed. Take your money to another vendor!

I think the people who reviewed this film are a bit warped for thinking of it as anything less than a masterpiece. This film comes from the glorious days of Johnny Depp taking obscure roles in films and totally immersing himself in the character. Benecio Del Toro's performance was second to none, and I cannot for the life of me comprehend why someone would think this to be the "worst movie ever". God save us that we actually have to think a little when we sit in those awful theatre seats. Heaven forbid we're required to use our imagination a little bit and not have it handed to us in the form of Hollywood mindless pap. The film, del toro, Depp, and of course, Gilliam are all brilliant. I pity the fools who gave this movie a negative review and fail miserably in articulating their reasoning.Read full review
The first thing I said to my husband after we'd watched this movie together was "I just remembered why I don't use drugs!" This movie provides some insight into the misery and destruction that goes along with drug abuse, although it is far from being a realistic picture. In this movie, journalist Raoul Duke (Johnny Depp) and his attorney (Benicio Del Toro) drive from Los Angeles to Las Vegas on a business-trip turned drug trip. I had a really hard time assigning a numeric rating to this movie. As far as personal enjoyment goes, I'd give it somewhere between 1-2 stars. I am a huge Johnny Depp fan & I usually enjoy watching anything he does...but it's hard to watch anyone self-destruct, even when you realize that it is excellent acting on film. The acting in this movie IS excellent and worthy of 5 stars. The costumes, sets, props...all are very well-done. The cinematography is pretty amazing too. I'd recommend that you rent this movie once before buying it...unless of course you find it on ebay for less than the cost of a rental, in which case go for it- because you can always re-sell it if you end up hating it! I watched it once and I would not watch it again.Read full review
It's an odd one! This movie is perfect for anyone who's had to "clean up their act." While the visual aspects of the movie are a little out-of-this-world, they are hilarious. Johnny Depp is amazing in this movie. While the role is not a real stretch for anyone's acting skills, his portrayal of Hunter S. Thomson, aka "Raoul Duke" is dead-on. Benicio del Toro's character is so ridiculously funny, too. It's great for nostalgia.
What to say about Fear and Loathing? It is an example of that ultra rare breed of perfect movie. Excellent source material! The late Hunter S. Thompson was an insane genius. The Gonzo journalist captured the spirit of some turbulent times with equal measures of keen observation, a searing wit, and an unbridled imagination. But, the fact that this film is an all too accurate portrayal of this cultural icon is only half the fun. If you are a fan of Johnny Depp or just good old fashioned great acting, his portrayal of Thompson is flawless. This is no accident. Depp was already a huge fan of Thompson anyway, but spent months researching this role and studying his mannerisms. It was fitting that Depp presided over Thompson's funeral celebration by lauching his cremated remains in a giant fireworks display over the Aspen mountains where Thompson had a ranch. As crazy as this sounds, this movie is even more outrageous! If you want to laugh until you cry and then do it all over again, you have to watch this movie. A fitting tribute to the counter-culture of a bygone era, this is Haight Asbury versus Las Vegas, with no holds barred. You may not even recognize Benicio del Toro in the role of Hunter's attorney but you won't soon forget it. A classic. I'd say 6 stars out of a possible 5 would sound about right. Hunter S. Thompson may not have burned long but he did burn bright! "Come on baby light my fire!Read full review
If you missed the 60's and want to know more about this crucial time in American history, then this is the movie for you. If you want to learn about "Gonzo Journalism" then this is the movie for you. If you don't care about any of this, you will laugh your head off anyway. Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro give bravura performances, with a whole host of cameo appearances from the likes of Gary Busey, Tobey Maguire, Christina Ricci, Cameron Diaz, Ellen Barkin, and Mark Harmon to name a few (since this was made in 1998, Cameron and Ellen are hot!). The entire movie bounces all over the place from the most hysterical sight gags and physical humor, to appalling drug abuse, to deep philosophical musings on the 60's and the American Dream. NOT FOR CHILDREN (and most teens). Also, watch with the captions on so you don't miss a funny (or serious) comment.Read full review
