This is one of the best American espionage movies ever made, because there is lots of mystery and double dealing involved, and it involves white collar crime. It also includes one of Steve Martin's more serious roles. If you watch it over and over again, like I have, you see a few continuity problems, but these don't really detract from the movie very much.

I love Steve Martin in more serious roles. Even though he is hilarious in a lot of his pictures, movies like the Spanish Prisoner make you realize what a good actor he really is. It doesn't hurt that the supporting cast in this film, although lesser known, are equally good. Mamet's legendary use of language and the idea of the enigma shine in this clever stor about a man who has invented a secret formula. Everyone is out to get it, so an intense pursuit begins. The twist ending is one you probably won't see coming. Although Rebecca Pidgeon is an interesting character in the story, her annoying banter can sometimes drive you nuts. She brings as much to the film as she detracts from it. Just keep in mind that this is no ordinary film, and you'll enjoy it immensely.
Well acted and interesting plot. Steve Martin in a non-comedic role is, in itself, interesting.

Dragnet fans will like this movie. What seems like wooden lies ala Dragnet, are perfectly syncronized with background mezmerizing music. Cambell Scott and Rebecca Pidgeon interact perfectly. Steve Martin has the talent to play dramatic roles well. And Ben Cazzara, well, He's Ben Cazzara, one of the most underrated actors ever. Tired of the same mystery plot over and over? Well this one has twists and turns Hitchcock would not come up with. Beware; this video is habit forming.
I had never seen The Spanish Prisoner before until recently. I was so intrigued with the characters in this movie. Nobody in the movie is who they appear to be. The ending was so incredible. A psychological thriller for the ages! Highly recommend this movie!
