About this product

Product Information

CLASSIC ALBUMS takes a behind-the-scenes look at the making of The Band's self-titled 1969 album, which includes some of the group's most influential songs such as "The Weight" and "Up On Cripple Creek." Part of a series of documentaries broadcast on VH-1 and PBS, the film features interviews with Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Garth Hudson, and producer John Simon. Conversations about musical techniques and styles are offset by performances with luminous guests such as Eric Clapton, George Harrison, and Don Was. Recording in a studio outside of Hollywood Hills, Robertson performs "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" on solo piano, Hudson does multiple instrumental keyboard solos, and Danko offers a solo rendition of "When You Awake."

  • What about Richard?

OK, a great story. However, there is not NEARLY enough material about Richard Manuel, the heart and soul of The Band. All this interview material with Jamie Robertson and the producers is an insult to the memory of Richard. Their best album was Stage Fright, the one after this. In other interviews, probably those cut from this production, both Clapton and Harrison spoke at great length about Richard. What a shame! I was hoping for at least ten minutes about Richard, but no, just the standard narrative that Robertson was everything.
