Reporter Ernest Hemingway is an ambulance driver in Italy during World War I. While bravely risking his life in the line of duty, he is injured and ends up in the hospital, where he falls in love with his nurse, Agnes von Kurowsky. Bullock and O'Donnell have a wonderful chemistry, and the lighthearted moments are weighed against a tale of great agony and suffering without being preachy or too painful. There are serious moments, when the reality of life and war come home to Ernest, and there are beautiful moments, when Catherine explores Italy. It's a wonderful mix of the dramatic and the light, without being overdone or showy. A very absorbing story of the young Ernest Hemmingway.
I've always been a great Hemingway fan....but this story really allows you to see the man who started off so innocent and how his character evolved ...how his pain of his lost love, the betrayal and the hardened stubborn pride that kept him from the woman he truely loved yet refused to bend an inch and have it....after seeing this you can view his later writings and see so much of where his stories came from within him, as well as how he was miserable his whole life after the war...the failed marriages the susbtance abuse and the eventual ending of his own life...a wonderful and yet heartbreaking dipiction of Ernest Hemingway
this movie is an excellent love story, but the ending was very sad and dissapointing. I was hopeing for a happy ending where they got married and lived happily ever after, like normal love stories. ON the other hand it wasn't predictable like other movies. But what you have to realize is it is based on a true story, and you can't change the endings of life, so that you like them. The actors had great chemistry and I do recomend this movie. There is some graphic scenes and gore in this film. I enjoyed this movie but it did make me cry because it made me realize life doesn't have a happy ending and what the soldiers go through, to fight for our freedom.
I am a big Hemingway fan and was glad the film was made. It showed the human side of Hemingway and did not dwell on the literary side of the author side of the novelist. It was a great film.

Well acted and based on the diary of the nurse and letters to and from Hemmingway.. fine movie. Sandra Bullock is great as usual and very beleivable in the role of the nurse.. The battle scenes are all so realistic .. makes one wonder why there are wars anyway! Just bloody killing for what purpose??
