200 MOTELS by FRANK ZAPPA is from the original MGM Motion Picture Soundtrack and features The Mothers of Invention and The Philharmonic Orchestra. I would best summarize 200 Motels by saying it is 92 minutes and 37 seconds of "Surrealistic Conceptual Progressive Work of Art" with a variety of diverse lyrical musical content (Clasical-Orchestra,Rock,and Doo-Wop with an underlining comedic theme, as well as being serious). Of all the reasons why I purchased this 2 CD Set, there are 2 reasons that stand out. First is that I am a serious collector of Frank Zappa and this is second to last work of FZ I needed to complete my collection (having now 74 out of 75 cd's-many of which are doubles and many triple(3 cd)sets). Second reason is that I thouroughly enjoy early Mothers for many reasons. What I enjoy the most of 200 Motels is the Comedy Value of his conceptual work of Art and his ability to be serious as well and offer a musical variety of content. There is really nothing I dislike about it. I particularly like the Packaging of this 2cd set, which comes complete with a comprehensive thick booklet of pictures and information. Also included is a nice poster, which is the same as the cover art and suitable for framing. And the disc's feature a wonderful picture image. The entire thing is very professional, typical of many of Frank Zappas other works. Speaking of similarity, one could easily compare 200 Motels to FZ and MOI (Mothers of Invention)"Live at the Fillmore", and "Just Another Band from LA" when you hear Flo and Eddie do some of their comedy routines. 200 Motels is a conceptual work similar to FZ's "Thing Fish" only on a different level. When I mention diversity and variety, songs like ex."Daddy,Daddy,Daddy" is remeniscent of the Doo-Wop days of "Ruben and the Jets" of which FZappa has roots and is very fond of this early period of music. 200 Motels "Magic Fingers" is almost a replica of "My Guitar wants to kill your Mama" from the lp "Weasels ripped my Flesh" whereby again one can hear the genius of Frank Zappas innovative guitar solo, as he demonstrates his many sides, also as a rock performer. I would easily buy this again and recommend it,even for its variety and ability to switch styles with the greatest of ease! But the reality of it all is that liking Frank Zappa is not enough for one to like 200 Motels. In addition, one would really have to like the Mothers of Invention to like 200 Motels; because this work (bottom line), although produced and featuring FZ and a number of others such as Ringo Starr and Keith Moon (as seen in the movie), the Mothers and the Philharmonic Orchestra are what this conceptual work is all about. So if you can answer yes to all of the above, then you will enjoy this as much as I do. Thank you for listening.Read full review
