I knew little of this movie prior to purchase, except that it had something to do with a non-nuclear family & that Jason Robards was in it. I have been collecting Hallmark Hall of Fame movies as I find them in VHS format, at a good price. Anytime I find a title with a selling price of less than $5.00, I consider it a good deal. Journey is the younger son of a family, who is about 10 or 11, with a teen-age sister. They live with Journey's maternal grandparents. Sometimes, Journey's mother is there & sometimes, she leaves for periods of time. Grandpa is a hard-working farmer/rancher. Grandma is a typical farm-wife. In the beginning of this part of the family's story, the mother is getting ready to leave again. She is packing & giving away some things she is not going to take with her - an old Exacta SLR camera, for one, and a recorder for another. Grandpa takes the camera & starts to re-learn how to use it, starting with taking pictures of "cow-pies". I don't know why this detail was included in the story, but it was. The hobby of photography quickly becomes an obsession for Grandpa. What prompts this is a box of pictures in the bedroom where Journey's mother stayed, she tears up every one of them. Grandfather is trying to replace those pictures, by taking more. Grandma loves watching the birds. A mysterious cat appears at a family picnic on Independence Day. The cat finds Journey's room & Journey & Grandpa know Grandma is not going to be happy having a cat around, that will chase-away "her" birds. The one farmer's helper notices that the cat is soon going to give birth. The cat finds the box of torn-up pictures. Journey finds her & attempts to put a few of the pictures together again, but ultimately gives the cat the box for her nest. His mother makes one brief visit after her departure & the viewer is left with the idea she is unlikely to return after that. There is not one thing I wish I had known prior to this purchase. I enjoyed the movie very much. It follow Hallmark's precedent of little or no swearing, little or no violence, little or no sexuality, and a good story. This is a story of relationships & hw sometimes "family is what you make it".Read full review
