Fountains of Wayne is a band known for its catchy tunes and smart, off-beat, often hilarious lyrics. They deliver here; however, this is definitely not on par - musically or lyrically - with "Welcome Interstate Managers." If you are unfamiliar with Fountains of Wayne, definitely check them out. But start with "Welcome Interstate Managers." For the "If you like this, you might also like that" crowd, I would classify Fountains of Wayne as a slightly less silly and eclectic They Might Be Giants or a more radio-friendly Too Much Joy. Fun stuff, and worth a listen!
Fountains of Wayne's self-titled debut distills the band's characteristic off-beat, dryly humourous lyrics coupled with catchy hooks/riffs into a set of great songs. The music is basically what an older Charlie Brown would sing if he had a band-- "I wonder if he ever has cried, because he couldn't get a date for the prom". Aside from one or two brief moments of filler, every single song on this album could be a classic power pop single. The guitar playing, the drums, the bass, and so on are all oddly catchy; you'll be humming along to everything. I highly recommend this CD.
I found the Fountains of Wayne debut album to be my least favorite out of all of them. They only got better after their debut, making me one happy fan!
