About this product

Product Information

From Merchant Ivory Productions, director James Ivory brings to the screen the story of statesman and Declaration of Independence author Thomas Jefferson (Nick Nolte). The film takes place during the five years Jefferson lived in pre-revolutionary Paris, serving as the American ambassador to France prior to the fall of the Bastille in 1789. JEFFERSON IN PARIS focuses, however, on the personal side of his time there. A widower, he meets beautiful Anglo-Italian artist Maria Cosway (Greta Scacchi), whom he starts to court. When his slave's sister, Sally Hemings (Thandie Newton), joins the family in Paris, Jefferson also begins a relationship with her that would last for many years and would produce, arguably, many children. This passionate affair with his African-descended slave has been the subject of many historical debates and is thought-provokingly rendered in this period drama. Gwyneth Paltrow also stars as Jefferson's daughter, Patsy.

  • Jefferson in Paris - compelling story - outstanding actors

Truthfully, I didn't know this would be a VHS tape, but the quality was perfect. When that happens, it is preferable to a DVD in my opinion. The story was interesting, compelling. The acting was outstanding. A Must See.

  • A History Where Jefferson's Transgressions Remain A Mystery

JEFFERSON IN PARIS is clinical when it should be vulgar, genteel when it should be passionate, and circumspect when it should be blunt! The first half concerns the doomed romance of recently-widowed Thomas Jefferson (Nick Nolte) and unhappily-married Marie (Greta Scacchi), but Jefferson foolishly sprains his wrist, his youngest daughter dies, and their wicked romance perishes on the vine. The second half concerns the arrival of Sally Hemming (Thandie Newton) as nanny to Patsy (Gwyneth Paltrow), and a rivalry for Jefferson's affections occurs between the two, but this is absurdly resolved once the 15 year old Hemming becomes pregnant by him. For every lively moment; as when a puppet show accuses Marie Antoinette of basest inset, or when a miniature guillotine is brought to the dinner table and an asparagus spear shows how it works, or when Sally offers Marie corn on the cob but then mocks her English table manners; these passages are more academic than dramatic. Even the fact that Jefferson and Hemming were related (beyond that she was also his property, uneducated and mostly unskilled) is quickly tabled. Despite his being in Paris and surrounded by leading members of the Enlightenment, Jefferson is never credibly challenged on his Democratic theories or even his personal mores. Instead, Jefferson is torn between three women with the collective I.Q. of a beautiful flower. This film is a wasted effort by all concerned.
